The worst thing a horror fan
could say about this horror
classic is that it spawned a
slough of ripoffs including

and story rather than blood
and gore to scare
There is one problem with
the script Who taught the kill
er to drive and why9 There is a
scene that tries to explain
that question, but I could n't
help but believe that the
scene was put into the movie
as an afterthought
This is an absolute must for
any serious horror fan
Rated R for violence and ex
treme tension
Invasion of the Body
Snatchers( 1956)

Invasion of the Body
Snatchers gets my vote for
the most frightening film ever

A Nightmare on Elm Street
(1985)
Director Wes Craven made
some real trash before this
(Last House on the Lett The
Hills Have Eyes). but he has a
winner here
This is the definitive psy
chological horror It s about
how the ghost of a dead child
murderer invades the dreams
of teenagers and murders
them in their sleep
Yes. that's a really dumb
premise But this works really
well because of the fiendish
ness of Freddy Krueger and
the genuinely nightmarish
feel of the dream sequences
Whatever you do don’t rent
any of the sequels to this
movie They are really just
high tech slasher movies
Rated R for extreme vio

Night oI the Living Dead
(1968)
Who says you need a big
budget to be scary9
George A Romero directed
this cult classic which, at the
time of its release, drew heavy
condemnation from critics as
nothing more than a geek
show
It has nonetheless with
stood the tests of time and is
considered for what it is a
ground breaker in horror
The story is about a small
group of people holed up in a
house that is surrounded by
man eating corpses It is ev
ery bit as grisly as it sounds
Romero also directed Dawn
ot the Dead as a sequel to
Night Both the original and
the sequel are excellent Hal
loween fare, if the viewer has
the stomach for it Claustro
phobic people will be able to
identify
Not rated but probable R
for gore and tension

Holiday rites
based on fact
By Daralyn Trappe
Emerald Contributor
About this time of year, the
subiect of superstition seems
to get more attention than
usual According to Sharon
Sherman the Director of Folk
lore at the University, the rea
son such things come up at
Halloween is that this holiday
is one folklore we all have in
common
Although it is now a holiday
that many people around the
world celebrate, the origins
and traditions of Halloween
go all the way back to pre
Christian times in the United
Kingdom
There are certain times of
year when we have transi
tions One of those transi
tions is from harvest into win
ter A festival for the begin
ning of winter was celebrated
on November First in Ireland
and Scotland It was called
Samhain The Druids made
sacrifices to the gods on the
eve of Samhain Oct 31
Sherman said
On that day. all the small
fires in the community were
put out so that only one big
fire burned That was where
the sacrifices took place It
was also the origin of the
modern day bonfire
The tradition of trick or
treating also has its roots in
the Samhain festival It was
common for people to "go
door to door asking for provi
sions. such as food or coins,
for the festival Fairies and
the spirits of the dead were
out because their barrows
were open
Besides being a time to cel
ebrate winter, Samhain had
also become a time for the
souls of the dead This is the
reason many people avoided
churchyards on Halloween
Sherman said
In the Seventh Century.
Pope Boniface IV decided that
the pagan festival should
be turned into a Christian fes
tival The tradition of recog
mzing the souls of the dead
then became All Saints Day
and All Souls Day. still cele
brated in the Catholic Church
on Nov 1 and 2 All Saints
Day was also called All Hal
lows Day. and the day before
was called All Hallows Even .
or the evening of the dead
It was eventually shortened to
Halloween. Sherman said
According to Sherman, the
celebrations dealing with Hal
loween still serve a purpose in
society Today, it provides a
way of behaving in ways that
you normally could not One
function of folklore is to pro
vide a release."
