tiling, although not everyone
agrees, that the\ were identi
tied as a problem areas in the
summer, so when tail comes
around in most cases 1 hope the
problems will be fixed.
We faced a particularly se
vere housing problem this past
tall because our enrollment was
wav up. With a slight dec lease
in enrollment. I think there u ill
be some relief there It's not
i Icar to me that this will solve
our long term problems We are
particularly stressed in the area
ot family housing. More and
more of our students are non
traditional students, that is
they are returning students
with families with single par
enls. and we need to look to
wards means of providing
housing lor them So th.it will

//mi committed are von to
the proposed Riverfront Re

year or so to continue its devel

I think the Riverfront Re
search Park is an appropriate
project tor the I'niversiU to on
dertake. and it we did not have
one under way. I would seek to
develop one We need, howev
er, to get expectations in line
with what’s possible We re not
going to create a "resean h tri
angle’’ in downtown Kugetie or
a Silicon Valley in downtown
Rugene.
Hut we will over time in a
dei ade or two. c reate .1 situa
lion in which appropriate ace
domic related facilities will be
located near the UniversiH so
that faculty members and stu
dent interns will have the ad
vantage of working directly
with the industry as they

It will not be a plai e that vv ill
do secret military msoarch. We
will move slowly and we will
insure that everything built in
the research park has an aca
demic relationship, but we will

I think it's immnral not to
use animals for research I he
overall good to human kind, as

Itisf to give some obvious ex

cancer would come to a dead
stop without animal rescan h
and we can't afford to do that
Now having said that. I must
immediately add the following
qualifications We should be
very humane in our treatment
of animals in rescan h. ven
( ogni/.ant of the painful asper Is
of that We should minimize
however possible, the use of
animals in research That
doesn't mean stopping re
search. it means using a mini
trial number.
