Oregon golf ready
for West Regional
The Oregon men's golf
squad will be one of IB
teams vying for nine entries
from the West to the NCAA
Championships next month
when they take part in the
NCAA West Regional in El
Paso, Tex.. May 25-27. The
announcement was made
from I-as Cruces. N.M.. on
Wednesday by District 8
Golf Chairman Herb W'im
lierly of New Mexico State.
The Ducks, who tied for
fourth in the Pacific-10 Con
ference Championships ear
lier this month, are one of
seven Pac-10 schools taking
part in the regional, along
with Fresno State, San lose
State and Nevada-1 iis Vegas
in District 8
District 8 includes the
Par 10. Hig West and West
Coast Athletic Conferences.
Pac-10 members in the re
gional include top-seeded
Arizona State, Arizona.
USC, Stanford. Washington
and UCLA.
Representing District 7.
encompassing the VVAC and
Hig Sky Conferences, are
top-seeded Texas-El Paso
and the regional host. New
Mexico. Brigham Young.
Nevada-Reno. Weber State
and l hah
Five individuals will also
participate for one trip to the
NCAA's. June 7-10 in Ed
mond. Okla., and include
Aaron Bengochea of Pacific.
Don Parsons of UC-Santa
Barbara. Warren Vickers of
Oregon State. Paul McCin
ley of U.S. International and
Tim Todd of San Diego
State.
This marks the first year of
regional qualifying which
the golf subcommittee felt
would help reduce the num
ber of teams qualifying for
the NCAAs. relieve the com
petitiveness in selections
and provide more teams a
chance at qualifying
"We wouldn't have had
the chance for an NCAA bid
under last year's selection
format." Oregon coach Scott
Krieger said. "The way
we've been playing the last
month of the season, we
have a real good chance of
qualifying for the NCAA's."
As of last weekend. Krieg
er had determined four of
the five spots for a qualify
ing team. Tom Smith, Chris
Hol/.gang. Troy Tamiya and
Bob Rannow have all quali
fied for the trip to El Paso.
