Duck sprinter Hunter tries
to conquer different event
By Cary Henley
Emerald Sports Editor
Stefanie Hunter — hep
tathlete.
It has a funny ring to it. one
the Oregon sprinter never
thought she would hear.
"Actually, I kind of thought
‘I don't want to do all this stuff,
like throw. It’s going to change
my training and I'm going to be
at the track all day'. But I kind
of like it. I like throwing the
shot I've never thrown a jave
lin yet. except for in practice.
It's kind of exciting throwing
the shot. People laugh at that.”
People aren’t laughing now.
especially not assistant coach
Mark Stream, the sprints coach
at Oregon who said Hunter will
be the better for trying the
heptathlon, no matter what the
results.
"There's a lot of mechanical
techniques involved with
throwing, putting yourself in

different positions which I
think are applicable to sprint
ing," Stream said. "She's
learned more about herself and
her body and what she can do
by trying all these odd-ball
events.”
At times, it sounds as if
Hunter and Stream aren’t tak
ing this new venture too seri
ously. but nothing could be fur
ther from the truth
"We've done a lot of test
ing," Stream said. "And she's
performed very well in the
power and strength tests. She
was good in all the tests."
The obvious setback was that
Hunter had never hurdled, long
jumped or thrown, and "she
hadn't high jumped since the
eighth grade," Stream said.
"She's been involved in a lot of
learning, a lot of training. 1
think it's made her a better
sprinter. It's tottered her abili
ties. So whether she qualifies
or not. it's not like it's been a
waste of time."
Hunter's only goal this sea
son is to "qualify for the NCs.
It's kind of hard to run certain
times. It's easier to focus on
qualifying, because if you run
good, the times will come."
Hunter has qualified for the
Pacific-10 Conference Cham
pionships in the 100 and 200
meters, but is still looking for
that elusive qualifying mark for
the NCAA’s, both in the sprints
and the heptathlon.
"Being a novice, I think she
has potential (in the hep
tathlon)." Stream said. "Her
goal is to qualify in either the
Oregon Invitational or the Pac
10’s, and meet the national
qualifying standard. She’s done
all the events except the 800. so
