Sale says science won't save Earth
By Rene DeCair

Disasters such as global
warming, the hole in the ozone
layer and the extinction of spe
cies cannot be repaired by
"technofix." Kirkpatrick Sale
said Thursday.
Technofix is society's "reli
cicty). Human Si*le and
Dweller* in the Lund: Hio
itgional Vision
Sale, speaking as part of the
Survival Center’s Karthweek
'89 Celebration, told the crowd
that humanity faces an ecologi
cal crisis far worse than we
may realize. In fact. Sale said
the earth is not approaching a
'Our mother is not society but nature,
and nature knows best. Everything is con
nected. ’

gion of the industrial world,"
which says if then; is a problem
produced by science it can be
fixed by science, adding
" tech nofix won't work.”
Sale, a Cornell University
graduate has written numerous
books, three of which are SDS
(Students for a Democratic So
crisis but is in the middle of it;
human beings may already
have eliminated their means of
escape from the problem.
Sale said his bioregional vi
sion is the ecological solution
to environmental problems
which is most likely to suc

"The vision ignores all bar
riers of rich-poor. Democrat-Re
publican anti black-white.” he
said.
Sale said the four compo
nents of Bioregionalism in
clude a “re-enchantment of the
world.” “knowing place.”
"listening to the voices of the
earth” and "biocentrism”
A "re-enchantment of the
world" means moving our
selves away from the "religion
of science” that teaches that
the earth is lifeless. Sale said
"We have to come to see the
earth as holy.”
The second component,
"knowing place." is learning
to know home. .Sale said that
the earth itself is unknowable
but we can know our own re
gion. and added humans must
understand the absolute limits
the land can hold.
The third part of Bio
regionalism is "listening to the
voices of the earth" to under
stand the laws of nature. "Our
mother is not society but na
ture. and nature knows best.
Everything is connected.” he
said
Finally, biocentrism is the
ability of humans to live in har
mony with other species.
Sale said there are 125 birr
regional groups in the country,
and is positive the movement
will work because it is an ap
propriate answer for the pres
ent. Sale said that the new eco
logical movement may la* un
precedented, “but the crisis is
unprecedented."
Student Senate tables
diversity, IFC motions
By Brad Robertson
Emerald Reporter
The Student Senate tabled
two motions relating to
ASUO politics brought by
Senator Pieter Paulson on
Thursday night.
The first motion dealt
with the lack of diversity in
the ASUO under any admin
istration and the lack of Sen
ate power in regards to con
firming ASUO executive ap
pointments. which Paulson
said he believes arc current
_Student Senate—
ly composed almost entirely
of campaign workers from
the presidential ticket.
"Everytime someone has
won they have hired their
friends. The Student Senate
has no power to confirm
people,” Paulson said.
Senate Chair Eric Grimes
said the Student Senate
should be based as closely as
possible on the U S. Govern
ment which does have the
power to confirm cabinet ap
pointments.
‘The ASUO executive
should be opened up to as
many people who are not al
ready involved in govern
ment," Paulson said.
The motion was tabled at
the advice of Senator Patrick
Johnston because he said the
Senate should first look at
constructive ways to com
municate with the new ad
ministration to involve as
many people as possible in
ASUO government.
"Upon the election of the
new president and vice-pres
ident we will have them
come to the Senate." Crimes
said
Paulson's other motion
called for student groups
who receive 1FC funding to
stop endorsing candidates
for ASUO office.
"If you receive 1FC funds
. then you have no right to
endorse candidates," Paul
son said.
The Student Senate,
which does receive 1FC
money, can not endorse can
didates.
This motion was tabled so
the Senate could find out
more about the present en
dorsement methods and so
that the motion itself could
be made more presentable.
In other business the Sen
ate questioned current EMU
Hoard member Joeseph
Ssebanakitta about his con
firmation to the ASUO Con
stitution Court before adding
their formal acceptance.
