Men's tennis
takes easy wins
at Willamette
John Karly gave the Oregon
men's tennis team a pair of 6-0
shutouts as the team romped
past Willamette University 9-0
in Salem Wednesday.
Karly skunked Chris Meier
twice at No. 6 singles. The
Bearcats were able to extend
the Ducks out to three sets in
three of the matches, hut
couldn't pull out any victories.
In Oregon's other singles tri
umphs. James Hazard pounded
Kelley Tuttle 6-2. 6-2 at No 1.
Kevin Cory ripped David Jerke
6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Brian Cope
land held off John Lovell 4-6,
6- 4. 6-2 at No. 3, Carlos Gomez
prevailed over Jeff Himstreet
7- 6, 3-6. 6-1 at No. 4. and Rich
ard Shugar blasted Dean Meyer
6-1. 6-2 at the No. 5 position.
Doubles action provided the
Ducks with both easy and diffi
cult victories. Cory and Hazard
lopped Jerke and Tuttle in a
5-7. 7-5, 6-3 marathon at No. 1.
while Peter Bartlett and Jon
Weinberg defeated Himstreet
and Lovell 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2.
A trip to southeastern Wash
ington is next on the schedule
for the Oregon men. The Ducks
face Washington State in a neu
tral site dual at Kennewick on
Saturday, then square off
against Whitman College in
Walla Walla on Sunday.
The duals against the Cou
gars and Missionaries are the
team's final tuneups for the
Pac-10 Northern Division
championships, slated for April
28-29 in Eugene.
The win raised the Ducks' re
cord to 12-8 overall. They re
main 0-2 in the Pacific-10 Con
ference Northern Division.
