The demonstrators set up
huge roadblocks across the
main roads leading to and from
the town. Although the violent
clashes had ceased by noon,
banks, schools, stores and all
government offic es remained
closed
The political unrest began
following the arrests Tuesday
of seven pro-independence at
tivists or supporters of the tinv
Popular Union lor the l ibera
tion of Guadeloupe
The seven are < barged with
bomb attacks in januarv 1088
on a bank and the homes of five
French European residents, in

72 arrested in raids

tion of repression by the armed
forces and Arena."

The raids came hours after
