Alxmt 600 high school stu
dents from all areas of Oregon
will be on campus today
through Sunday taking part in
the 40th Annual Model United
Nations conference.
According to a release from
the Oregon High School Inter
national Relations League, each
students comes to the confer
ence to represent a selected
country’s views on one of sev
en committees of the General
Assembly.
The delegates, representing
Albanians to Zimbabweans,
will debate issues such as
apartheid, disarmament, ozone
layer depletion, the problem of
the Palestinian Homeland, the
issue of refugees, and interna
tional trade and debt crisis.
Delegates will read policy
statements representing the po
sitions of their country anil af
ter debate, they attempt to pass
resolutions to solve specific
problems, the release stated.
The resolutions then will be
sent to the U.N. General As
sembly for confirmation or re
jection.
A packet of all the resolu
tions passed by the assembly
will be sent to Oregon senators
and representatives, the U.N.
Association of the United
States, the United Nations and
participating high schools in
hopes that teen views on world
issues wili become more vise
hie.
Many of this year's delegates
are taking the role-playing very
seriously.
The PLO ambassador, a se
nior from Jefferson High
School, is growing out Ins
beard and wearing a checked
keffiyeh like Yasser Afafat, the
release stated.
Christopher Fox. a Lincoln
High School senior, started ear
ly by meeting with Arafat last
summer in Tunisia and going
on a 10-day fact-finding mis
sion to Israel on Rabbi Joshua
Stampfer's Witnesses for Mid
dle East Peace Study Tour, the
release stated.
The conference is sponsored
by the Oregon High School In
ternational Relations League,
the oldest student organization
in the state.
