Watch for Friday's Entertainment Section _ASUO Elections Kaniewski, McRae: 'results, not activism' By Frale de Gu/man Emerald Associate Editor Josef Kaniewski and Karl McRae ASUO presidential and vice presidential candi dates have a burning need to "see results, not just activism " According to their platform outline. both < andidates strong ly believe that "a student gov ernment out of touch with the needs of a large and extremely diverse community (and) of fers the students government of the few. by the few. for the few.' ’ It is this "trading of posi tions" by candidates represent ing special interest groups that laith candidates would like to see change in the upcoming year. To accomplish this goal, both Kaniewski and McRae said they would "assertively recruit" members of all student groups to positions in the ASUO. This includes the hiring of "paid members to our leader ship team from the Foreign Stu dents Organization and the Greek system to give all groups a direct voice in all ASUO poli cy decisions." McRae, also a junior political science major, further enhances both candidate’s “international flavor" and political back ground. I,ast fall, he worked in Lane County's Oregonians for Jack son campaign, was a volunteer worker on the “No On Measure 8“ campaign and in 1984-85 at tended the Gujarat Vidyapith school in Ahmedabad, India as part of a program sponsored by tiie School for International Training in Vermont. He also worked on the Gary Hurt for President campaign in 1987. the Neil Goldschmidt for Governor campaign in 1986, and met with former Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai in 1986. Heironimus, a junior finance major running lor the one-year Incidental Fee Committee seat, also said he would like to see student groups receiving a fair allocation of student fees. "Ideology should not play a large role in the allocation pro cedure." he said. Because once it does, "the 1FG is no longer working for the students." Heironimus admitted that his lack of experience may appear to be a hindrance, but he does not believe that it should deter people from electing him to de position "I'm a quick learner, and 1 don't believe that there is any thing so hard that I can’t learn it," he said. In addition. Heironimus said that during the year when he served as dorm president l‘IHti-87. he received "a taste of how it felt to work with other students " His background in finance provides him with a familiarity Dave Heironimus of the budget process and what he does not know now. he is "willing to learn along the way” If elected to the position. Heironimus said he would like to see some changes made to the IFC's method of funding. His concern with the issue of campus safety and wish to in crease student exposure to cul tural and educational events is seen in his desire to increase funding to programs that pro mote these issues.
