Ihan self-motivation." Heiny
said of Baker's work ethic.
"She is one of the best exam
ples to the team as far as work
is concerned."
Before packiiiR her bags for
Oregon. Baker, an honorable
mention all-America choice by
Street and Smith's and Parade
magazine at Hanford High
School, received offers to play
for current Pec-10 powerhouses
Washington and Stanford, as
well as recent Duck killer Colo
rado
"One reason I didn't go to
Stanford was that I thought
they weren’t going to be very
good," Baker said. "I played
with Trisha Stevens (1987-88
F’ac-lO All-Freshman team) on
the junior national team and we
kidded her a lot about her deci
sion to go there.
"After (the Ducks) lost to
Colorado in Hawaii, I kind of
wondered what would have
happened had I gone there or to
another school," she contin
ued. "Then again. I'm not sure
where I would've stood with
other teams."
Following the Ducks' most
recent win against Oregon
State, a game in which her
playing time was limited.
Maker found herself doing not
so much celebrating as
soulsearching
"After the game. 1 got back to
the hotel and started to cry."
Baker said "I never had a
chance to lx- a pari of it It
seemed like OSIJ was more bal
anced and they were able to put
more players In the game
Things like that always look
great when you are on the other
team "
Despite her thoughts of what
could have been. Baker remains
fairly comfortable in her role as
starting guard for the VVebfoots.
“1 just hope I can be happy
wherever I'm at." she said. "1
wanted to go someplace that
would give me a lot of good
memories, and I think playing
basketball at Oregon will give
me at least that."
Like most athletes. Baker re
alizes that then; is room for im
provement in her performance.
Unlike most athletes, however.
Baker is undaunted when it
comes to finding answers
"I'm still young so I ask a lot
of questions," Baker said "1
haven't taken much guff from
the other players about it,
though It is the same in school
— I can't stand just sitting
there clueless about something
"If I don't know the answer
to a math problem or some
thing. then it will bother me
the whole day." she said "I
just figure that it's better to ask
now than to look stupid later."
