empt current uses of such sub
stances as long as the amounts
used don't increase.

search park, said no official
analysis has been done on the
measure.
She said the city has been
working on its hazardous mate
rial ordinance for the past two
years and is close to complet
ing it for city council review.
"My feeling is that the ordi
nance will apply to the whole
city of Eugene and that ought
to be sufficient to handle any
material stored on the site."
Wiley said.
The definition of hazardous
substances used in the measure
would include several hundred
chemicals. including paint
thinner and other types of sol
vents. degreasing and cleaning
agents and heavy metals such
as cadmium and arsenic.
The group plans to have the
measure placed on the next pri
mary election ballot, in May

er signs. Larson said there is no

Fulbright scholarship
winners announced
Six University graduates
have received 1988-89 Ful
bright awards for student study
and research abroad.
Award recipients include
Anne Parker, a doctoral student
in geography, Tudi J. Caster
and Rachel Swain. Caster and
Swain both are graduate stu
dents in Germanic languages
and literature. Awards also
were given to Howard Sargent,
a graduate student in history.
Thomas Kerr and Timothy
Becker. Kerr and Becker are
graduate students in architec
ture.

best universities in the nation."
said Thomas Mills, the Univer
sity's Fulbright program advis
er and director of the Office of
International Services. "I’m
proud of them."
This year, University gradu
ates received six of the 038 na
tionwide Fulbright awards giv
en out last spring. According to
Mills, award recipients official
ly were notified of their stand
ings in the summer and now
are studying abroad.
The recipients were six ot
about 25 graduate students who
applied for the Fulbright grant,
which enables students to take
part in educational activities
and research opportunities
abroad. Contest participants
turned in study proposals to a
local and national screening
committee. Selected study pro
posals then were sent to the in
dividual host country.
Students interested in apply
ing for a Fulbright grant for
1990-91 can contact the Inter
national Services Office at
086-3206. The deadline for all
applications is Oct. 16. 1989.
