Oregon native's film highlights football past

Boating the odds on the play
ing field has long been a staple
of Oregon football, mainly be
cause the odds against the
Ducks so often have been
heavy.
Now some prohibitive odds
have been beaten off the field
by a Kugene film producer.
The odds — physical and
technical — were high against
Jerry Thompson, a 36-year-old
native of Cottage Grove. Hut his
thirst for Oregon football tradi
tion, combined with his talent
as a filmmaker, have enabled
him to produce a video cassette
which has filmed highlights of

Thompson had a close-up
view of players coping with
physical adversity in 1969 and
1970, his years as an Oregon
football manager. Today, he
fights his own physical battle
against the juvenile rheumatoid
arthritis that has plagued him
since he was five.
But it's his obsession with
preserving history on film that
has refueled his professional
life, and spurred him to create
a videotape monument to Ore
gon football stars of the past,

looked to the past. But fortu
nately for Thompson, and for
Oregon sports history. Athletic
Director Bill Byrne liked his
idea, and supported him.
But the absence of vital film
footage from over the years
threatened to doom Thomp
son's effort. However, he got
"invaluable help" from Uni
versity Archivist Keith Richard.
Possibly the greatest game in
Oregon history, the 41-40 "mir
acle" victory over UCLA in
1970, wasn’t in Richard's files.
Nor was there any sign of prim
itive footage of Oregon's first
Rose Bowl appearance, against
Pennsylvania in 1917.
The “Miracle Game” against
the Bruins in 1970 saw the
Ducks score three touchdowns
in the final four minutes to
