Fresh fellows deliver unique sound
By Carrie Dennett
Emerald Contributor
The Seattle-based band The
Young Fresh Fellows will per
form their unique brand of rock
and roll Oct. 29 at 8:30 p.m. in
the EMU Ballroom.
The four-man band is com
posed of Jim Sangster on bass
and vocals. Scott McCaughey
on lead vocals and guitar.
Chuck Carrol on guitar and vo
cals and Tad Hutchison on
drums and vocals.
The Fellows achieved wide
spread acclaim after the release
of their third LP, The Men Who
Loved Music, and began to
play to sold-out clubs across
the nation. Despite their na
tional success, they remained
active in the Northwest music
scene.
Last April The Fellows
claimed five Northwest Area
Music Awards: Hand of the
Year, Best Record, Best Rock
Band, Best Songwriter and Best
Drummer.
The Fellows’ fourth and most
recent LP, Totally Lost, takes a
step away from the craziness
that the band has been known
for in previous works, such as
"Amy Grant,” a satirical ode to
the Christian-pop singer of the
same name.
McCaughey has said that the
music of Totally Lost is still
fun, but it is more serious that
some of their other work.

seem to take themselves more
seriously in songs such as the

poignant “No One Really
Knows" (“There's few things
in this world that she cannot
replace/there's few things in
this world I haven't seen in her
face”), many songs are reminis
cent of the fun and humor their
lyrics are known for.
The third cut on the LP The
Universal Trendsetter opens
with "I'm the universal trend
setter and it's a real gas/'cause 1
create the future and obliterate
the past." And in the definitely
weird "I'd Say That You Were
Upset," we hear “and Joe said
he caught you drinking Janitor
in a drum/then you tied up the
mailman and took him to the
vet.”
Opening for the group is the
Portland-based band Dharma
Bums. Tickets for University
students are $5 in advance, $6
the day of the show. General
admission seats are $7 in ad
vance, $8 the day of the show.
They are available at EMU
Main Desk, House of Records
and Record Garden.
