But even with Berry, the sta
tistics lie. They do not tell the
whole story. Berry is bigger
than his numbers. His person
ality and attitude are not re
flected in the record book, but
it is Berry’s character that
makes him a hero to his fans.
Consider his outlook toward
both track and field, and foot
ball: “My attitude toward the
two are the same." Berry said.
"I want to win the battle, 1 try
to practice well, train well,
then go out and do it.”
During a ten minute inter
view, Berry must have said hel
lo to at least fifteen people, ask
ing them how they were doing.
He knew them all by name.
Berry's perpetual smile is
probably a result of treating his
sports like sports and not like a
job.
"I guess I'm still like a kid
trying to have a lot of fun doing
both and not thinking about do
ing just track or just foot
ball,"he said. "Practice isn’t a
lot of fun. Having all your bud

“I hope so," he said, "I’m
known around here because of
track. I'd like to think that a lit
tie bit of the track stuff is in
their (the fans) minds when I’m
out playing football’’
But, while on the field, "the
track stuff” is out of his mind.
“I don’t think about it a lot;
right now it’s football season. I
