Avoid same mistakes in 1992

rassing reminder of how poorly
our recent international efforts
have been.
After being beaten convincing
ly by the Soviets, many people
feel we should be allowed to put
our best players forward and al
low our NBA players to com
pete. But do we really need to
send Magic Johnson, Larry Bird,
and Michael Jordan to Barcelona
in 1992 to uphold our national
pride?
I don't think so. A coach who
has international experience and
can select the right personnel
could take our best college play
ers and easily win the gold
again.
The dimensions and rules of
the international game arc
geared toward big, physical
players and good outside shoot
ers. Olympic Coach John
Thompson avoided selecting
these types of players, preferring
lean, very athletic players that fit
his personal style and that he
uses so effectively at George
town. But we're talking Big Red,
not Big East. Leaving All-Ameri
cans such as Steve Kerr, Scan El
liot and Jerome Lane off of his fi
nal roster was proof that Thomp
son did not consider outside
shooting, outstanding versatility
and rebounding top priorities.
I wonder, as Arvidas Sab
onis, the hulking Russian center
and Blazer draft choice, was out
muscling the twin twigs of team
USA, David Robinson and
Charles Smith, if Thompson was
not realizing his mistake.
It also appeared that Thomp
son's prison-like isolation of his
players from the press and other
outside influences only made
them more jittery. Thompson's
actions have been proven to suc
ceed at the college level but were
inappropriate for our national
team.

and he is branded a loser if the
team falls short. Let the bronze
