According to Ron Trebon, director of the University's Summer Session, enrollment in summer classes has been in creasing over the last three years, and he has "guarded op timism” that this will be another banner season. And despite what one might think, the nice weather doesn't hurt summer enrollment at all. "The weather in Eugene is a for midable asset to summer ses sion," Trebon said. There are actually many ad vantages that make summer classes attractive, he said. Classes are smaller than their regular season counterparts, and take less time to finish. Off campus housing, sometimes hard to find during the school year, "is not nearly as tight," Trebon said. Life in Eugene is pleasant during the warm months as well. There are many activities such as bicycling, river rafting and tennis offered through the University physical education department. Also, “there aren’t many Friday classes, so you get three-day weekends," Trebon added. In fact, it’s easy to schedule summer classes around students’ lifestyles, according to the summer session director. The University offers several weekend and evening classes, and many classes are offered that begin and end partway through the term. "You can just about come to campus any Monday and find a class just beginning." said Trebon. The goal of the Summer Ses sion office is to schedule the term so that new classes begin every week. This allows students to be creative in their scheduling yet fit in summer employment. Most summer students are already accustomed to the Univerity. Demographics from last year show that 65 percent of those taking summer classes also enroll during the regular school year. The other 35 percent are com munity citizens picking up classes and visitors from out side the state. Some students from Washington and California are in Oregon over the summer to establish residency. Trebon said there also are high numbers of foreign students enrolling in summer classes. A good portion of these are from the land north of us. “We have more and more Cana dians coming down every sum mer. That seems to lie a trend. Non-University students come to summer session because of the absences of out of-state tuition and a formal ad mission process, said Trebon. All students pay the same tui tion rate, based on the number of credits the student is enroll ing for.
