Heads return to international style
Talking Heads
Naked
The one thing that always
stays the same about Talking
Heads is that the band always is
changing. Starting out as a
spare New Wave quartet, they
then cut a few albums grounded

on African polyrhythms. Their
latest records were pop with
country and folk tinges.
“Naked” marks a return to
musical internationalism, with
the band traveling to Paris to
work with musicians who, ac
cording to the liner notes, play
“jazz. Rai. Zouk. highlife.
tangos, sambas and weird bran
ches of rap."
Never heard of Rai? Me
either, but how many of us had
heard of "township jive" before
"Graceland"?
The new sounds are mainly
interesting uses of percussion
and horn charts that sound at
once new and close to tradi
tional "American" styles.
The lyrics are vintage David
Byrne. His use of childlike
naivete is closer to the warmth
of "Little Creatures” than to the
seemingly mocking tone often
present on "True Stories." But
a handful of tracks also offer
some adult insights and some
truely funny lines.
‘‘Naked’’ merely
demonstrates that Talking
Heads has an ear for melody and
rhythm, intelligence for lyrics
and the good sense to gather all
this into a package that isn't
pandering or parochial. All
these are hallmarks of the great
music of the ‘80s. with which
"Naked" no doubt belongs.
