Kearnev places fifth in NCAAs to lead grapplers

Oregon’s wrestling team com
pleter! its comeback year with a
strong showing in the National
Collegiate Athletic Associa
tion’s Tournament held in
Ames, Iowa. The Ducks sent
five grapplers to the three-day
national championship held
during spring break. Team cap
tain Chuck Kearney finished
fifth to attain All-American
status and lead the Ducks to a
24th-place finish. They finished
with 15V« points.
If Arizona represents the
Pacific-10 Conference's hope to
gain respectability in this year's
NCAA Final Four in basketball,
then its cross-state rival did the
same thing for the Pac-10
wrestlers. Consider this:
Arizona State was the lone
western representative in the
top 15. while the Big Ten Con
ference alone had five.
But the Sun Devils were not
impressed. Arizona State broke
a streak of several decades that
the midwest, the Big Ten Con
ference and more specifically
the state of Iowa, had
dominanted the sport. ASU’s
victory was the first by a non
Iowa school in the last 14 years
of the national tourney. The
Sun Devils amassed 93 points,
Iowa was second with 85 V*. last
year's champion Iowa State was
third with 83 V« points.

Senior 177-pounder Chuck
Kearney lost his second-round
match but won four straight in
the consolation round before
losing again to finish fifth.
Kearney is Oregon's first All
American since Mike Erb finish
ed seventh in the 118-pound
match in 1983.
iunior Glenn Jarrett missed
becoming an All-American by
one match; he finished with a
3-2 tournament record. Jarrett
lost his second round match on
criteria after finishing the over
time match with Joei Bales of
Northwestern tied at 6-6, but
Oregon coach Ron Finley says
the films show Jarrett escaping
from Bales hold before time ex
pired. This year was Jarrett's
third NCAA appearance.
Oregon's other wrestlers —
126-pound James Hawthorne.
150-pound George Johnston,
and 158-pound Vince
Hochanadel were all eliminated
early.
"We had an outstanding tour
nament with everyone wrestl
ing well in the nationals. We
had a good showing." Finley
said. "Chuck (Kearney) wrestl
ed well in everying but the se
cond round and did well by
finishing fifth. We re looking
forward to next season with
everyone coming back in our
lineup but Kearney,
Hawthorne, and Hochanadel."
Oregon's regular season
record 14-3-1 was best since
1981-82, and this year's 24th
place finish in the NCAA's was
also its best since that same
season.
Brooks tabs new assistant coacn
Nick Aliotti was named to his
second stint as an assistant foot
ball coach by head coach Rich
Brooks Tuesday, one day before
the beginning of spring drills.
Aliotti, offensive coordinator
the last four years at Chico
State, replaces Bill Maskill,
who accepted the head
coaching position at Southeast
Missouri State on March 24.
Maskill had been at Oregon
for five years, coaching outside
linebackers and assisting with
the special teams last season.
Alietto will assume those
duties. Brooks said.
Alietto was a part-time assis
tant to Brooks from 1978
through the 1979 season, work
ing with running backs. He left
Oregon to accept the running
back coaching chores full-time
at Oregon State, where he re
mained four years under coach
Joe Avezzano.
Alietto began his career at
Cal-Davis following his gradua
tion from that school in 1975. A
three-time letterman at running
back, he assisted that position
for three years at Cal-Davis.
