NIT bid 'shocks' cagers
Reports of the demise of the
Oregon men's basketball
season, to paraphrase Mark
Twain, were greatly
exaggerated.
Officials from the National In
vitational Tournament breathed
new life into the corpse by
selecting Oregon as host of a
first-round NIT game Thursday
at McArthur Court against the
20-10 Santa Clara Broncos.
The game will begin at about
9:15 p m., after a previously
scheduled high school tourna
ment game.
Tickets go on sale today at 9
a m., and the student price is
$6. The ASUO contract that pro
vided free student admission
covers only the regular season,
said Chris Voelz. University
associate athletic director.
General admission tickets
will be offered for $8. reserved
seats for $12.
Oregon. 15-13 and a first
round loser in the Pacific-10
Conference Tournament on
r
Saturday (see story below), was
considered dead on arrival
Saturday after losing by 21
points to Stanford, which also
got an NIT offer.
It's time to reconsider. Coach
Don Monson and his players of
fered the same reason for
Oregon's unexpected inclusion
in the NIT's 32-team field.
All agreed the fans who made
Oregon's home attendance the
second highest in the con
ference were the deciding
factors.
"Give credit to the fans.
They're probably the reason we
were picked," said senior Rick
Osborn, who was caught com
pletely off guard by the news.
Taylor and Osborn, believing
their college hoop careers were
history, were hitting the books
and thinking about class finals,
not tournament finals.
"I was shocked. I thought we
needed a win against Stanford
to get in, but I guess we got
lucky." Taylor said.

Ducks take early Pac-10 exit
Oregon packed up its bags
and look an early exit from
the Goodyear Pacific-10 Con
ference Tournament on
Saturday as the Stanford Car
dinal finished the Ducks off
88-67 in men's basketball ac
tion at Tucson's McKale
Center.
Stanford outscored Oregon
52-31 in the final 20 minutes
of (he second-round game.
The Ducks, 15-13 overall,
were a model of inconsisten
cy. They played two separate
games after leading by as
much as eight in the first
half, then shooting .303 (10
of 33) in the second.
The victory gave Stanford
(20-10, 11-7)'its first 20-win
season since 1941-42.
