Blazing, wrestling Ducks continue hot streak

The undefeated Oregon
wrestling team added another
notch in its belt Wednesday
night by defeating the Portland
State Vikings in one of the
toughest meets of the season.
Oregon beat the Vikings
24-15 before 337 fans at MacAr
thurCourt. With the victory, the
Ducks move within one win of
tying their best start ever.
Oregon improved to 9-0 for the
year while Portland State fell to
4-6-1.
The Ducks' best start ever oc
curred in both the 1980-81 and
1981-82 seasons when they
posted 10-0 records to start their
seasons.
"1 thought they were going to
beat us," Oregon coach Ron
Finley said.
Oregon fell behind early with
a 9-4 loss by Jerry Valencia in
the 118-pound match. Portland

Portland State a 3-0 lead. The
Vikings then forfeited the
126-pound match to James
Hawthorne and, Oregon led 6-3.
Twenty-seven seconds into
the 134-pound match Glenn Jar
rett took down PSU's Hiag
Brown for a quick 2-0 lead, and
larrett led 2-1 after one period.
Jarrett completed a near fall and
takedown of Brown in the se
cond period for a 6-2 lead,
which he held on to to win 8-4.
Oregon led 9-3.
“larrett's meet was outstan
ding! He should have had a
standing ovation,” Finley said.
Jason Pehling took a close 3-2
loss to Mike McNall in the
142-pound match, and Portland
State was back within three,
9-6. George lohnston had a
takedown with otdy one second
left in the second period of the
150-pound competition on way
to a 8-3 victory. Halfway
through the meet Oregon led
12-6.
Portland State returned to
glory with Dan Russell's
superior decision 21-6 victory
against Vince Hochanadel in
the 158-pound match. The five
point win made the score 12-11.
Oregon.
Danny White may have won
the meet for the Ducks when he
escaped with a 7-7 draw in the
167-pound match. Andre
Taylor of the Vikings had White
in a near fall position for nearly
a minute and a half before time
ran out in the first period.
White returned to tie it twice
in the second and third periods
for the draw. Oregon led 14-13.
Oregon took control of the
rest of the meet with two major
decisions by Curt Strahm in the
177-pound match and Chuck
Kearney in the 190-pound divi
sion. Oregon got a draw from
Cam Strahm in the heavyweight
match. Oregon took the Vikings
24-15.
The Ducks take on the Fresno
State Bulldogs Saturday at
MacArthur Court.
