Ferguson-Murphy charity run to be Thursday By Stephen Maher Emerald Associate Editor Ten years ago University stu dent Hart Ferguson's father, Denny Ferguson, and the elder Ferguson's close friend. Fid Murphy, decided to jog a dif ferent route during their regular run in Portland. They eventually f o u n d themselves underneath the Morrison Bridge at Barbie’s Cafe and enjoyed beer and sweet rolls before jogging back home. The next year friends joined them on the zany run and a tradition was born; a tradition lhat now has a home in both Portland and Eugene. This Thursday at 4 pm. the third annual Eugene Ferguson Murphy Memorial Beer Run un folds. And on Dec 23, the Portland version of the fun run takes place for the 10th straight year. The Eugene run vs ill be dedicated in memory of Ed Murphy's son. Pat, a University senior until his death from an accidental gunshot wound on Oc:t. 3. "1 want people to remember Pat,” and at the same time con tribute to charity and enjoy themselves. Hart Ferguson said, and donated the pro< eeds from en EMU craft fair offers local Christmas gifts By Kelvin Wee Emerald Reporter Christmas is a time for giving, receiving and traditions One traditional event at the Univer sity that has not changed in the last fourteen years is the Annual Christinas Cruft Fair. Sponsored by the EMU Craft Center and the Cultural Forum, the fair will lie in the EMU Fir Room today and Thursday from 10 a m. to 5:30 p.m. The fair is designed to expose the University community to local and regional works of crafts-people and artists, said Carol Westlake, assistant direc tor of the EMU Craft Center. Everything at the fair is made in the Northwest and sold by the people who made it. Westlake said Included in the fair will he Christmas tree ornaments, wooden toys, ceramics, hand made jewelry, pottery, leather goods, baskets, rubber stamps, neon lamps, stuffed animals and handmade c I o t h e s , Westlake added. The Cultural Forum and the Craft Center don't profit from the fair All money exchanged at the fair is between buyers and merchants, with the Craft Center acting more as an organizer than as a landlord, ac cording to Westlake The fair also doubles as a con test for artisans from the region, she said. The non-partisan program, running from June 10 to Aug 18, 1988, includes time in North Carolina, the Rocky Moun tains, Dallas. Texas, a closing session in Washington. DC. and a filin'week internship in the business, government or community-service fields. All expenses are covered by the program and a $2,500 stipend is included.
