Food for the St. Vincent de

by a can drive called Lane

the Boy Scouts of America.
Some 5000 young people, each
assigned a specific area, go door
to-door collecting canned food.
Two years ago, thev added
clothing and other reusable
items to their drive, and began
donating to Goodwill and
Salvation Army, as well as St.
Vincent de Paul.
Almost as important as the
food programs are the toy and
gift programs. Most people,
especially children, take it for
granted that they will receive at
least some small gift at
Christmastime. For children, a
gift less Christmas is a disappoin
ting and potentially devastating
experience.
One ot the projects designed
to aid these i hildern is the Toys
for Tots program, sponsored hv
the Eugene Fire Department.
This has been conducted every
year since l‘M7, when it was a
Marine Reserve project. Today,
firemen will accept all donations
of new or used toys and
distribute them to children of
low- income families at
Christmastime. Because the
organization is non-profit, they
also may accept cash donations
to buy more toys for
distribution.
Another gift program many of
us will see this year is the Tree of
Joy located at Valley River
Mall. The tree, which was put

as do all of these charity
programs.
It’s important to recognise
and applaud those involved in
volunteering tor established
organizations. But tt's even
more important tor everyone
who is able, to find a way to
pitch in and help. Buy an extra
can of food when you grocery
shop to put in the bins at
Safeway; give an extra dollar
each month with your elecrrii
bill so hVt'EB can continue its

From it w ill evolve the best part
of Christmas — the spirit of
giving.
