The issue behind roadless
lands is that a certain amount of
forest needs to lx- preserved for
recreational use. wildlife
habitats and protection of
natural ecosystems, the sum
mary of KIS reports Opposition
suggests that the economy must
be considered and that there is
no need to preserve more
roadless land.
Within the alternate plans in
the draft, the number of acres
remaining roadless ranges from
210,000 to 13.000 Currently,
there are 209,845 acres in in
ventoried roadless areas in the
Willamette National Forest. The
preferred plan for 1988 calls for
(>8.000 acres of roadless land.
In drawing up alternate
plans, Anderson said they look
ed at what kinds of habitats
would be threatened with
changes in land allotment. The

for a diverse range of species."
Anderson said they decided
to focus on the habitats at risk
and look at the Spotted Owl
habitat specifically. In the alter
nate drafts, areas range from
1T>2 to 29 habitats. He said there
isn't an anticipated fluctuation
in Spotted Owl population but
in the preferred plan, more land
is being alloted for wildlife.
The issue of old-growth
timber is an emotional and
economical one. Anderson said.
"The issue is high volume of
timber versus ecological activi
ty and aesthetics." he
explained.

tional Forest has 888,350 acres
of old-growth and mature
