“Derek's probably feeling some pressure.” said
Oregon running back coach Gary Campbell
"He's a young player (19) with a lot of talent and
he's getting better. But the lack of playing time
because of injuries has stifled his improvement.
He's had leg, feet, and ankle injuries and it's been
hard for him to stay healthy
Homecoming game brings
Oregon alumni to Autzen
Autzen Stadium will be filled with
hundreds of alumni Saturday, back to root
for the Oregon football team against
Pactflc-10 Conference foe California.
But at least three Oregon alumni will be
doing everything they can to help the
Golden Bears spoil the Ducks'
homecoming.
Cal head coach Bruce Snyder is a
graduate of Oregon who played under Len
Casanova in 1960 and 1962. After gradua
tion, Snyder worked as an assistant under
Casanova, now athletic director emeritus at
the University, and Jerry Frei.
Two of Snyder's assistants, Terry Shea
and Tom Keele, also matriculated in
Eugone and played for the Ducks. Keele was
a member of Oregon’s 1958 Rose Bowl
team.
“He's performed well,” Campbell added, “but
with those type of injuries, he's going to be out of
condition."
Loville's injuries include a bothersome "turf
toe" wound, the result of playing on artificial sur
face for the first five games of the season.
Head coach Rich Brooks had big plans for
number 32, until the injuries hit
"His role in the offense this year has been
limited to a great extent because of the injuries
He's been hobbled all season, ever since the first
drive against Colorado. He hasn't produced as
we'd liked, but he's missed a lot of practice
time." Brooks said.
Could it he the sophomore jinx? Loville doesn't
think so.
"1 try to not let that (the jinx) bother me. I don't
want to mess with it," he said.
But as Loville goes, so go the Ducks. It's no
coincidence that those final three games of 1986
were all Oregon wins.
"As a team, we’re playing pretty well right
now. We've had some ups and some downs, but
it's all been positive." Loville said.
All positive except for the injuries Loville's
backfield teammate, Berry, has not been immune
to the injury bug. The Ducks' starting fullback
will miss Saturday's game with California
because of a hand injury.
But with his earlier comments about an ag
gressive running style, Loville sounds like he
may be ready to take on the look of a fullback.
Loville admits that he is striving to become
more of a power runner, but adds that he "ad
