Baez still makes good music with a conscience

loan Baez is almost as famous
for her political activism as for
her music.
She was one of the first
musical stars with a social cons
cience. It's a virtue that is once
again being practiced by many
of today's new generation of
musicians.
"Rock singers, especially,
could take a few lessons from
loan," said Beatrice Johnson, a
Portland- based singer
songwriter and long-time fan of
Baez. "The good news is that in
the last few years more musi
cians have developed a stronger
sense of social justice. The
benefit concerts of a few years
ago concerning the famine in
Ethiopia and the practice of
apartheid in South Africa were
beautiful expressions. But those
kind of happenings wouldn't
have been possible without so
meone like Joan."
Baez, who is scheduled to ap
pear at the Mult Center H p in.
Friday, has always been com
mitted to social justice As a
teenager. Baez attracted atton
tion with her remarkable voice
and her zeal for political and
social change.
She first gained critical atten
tion in 1959 when she appeared
at the Newport Folk Festival
She joined the Civil Rights
Movement in the early 'tilts,
often singing songs that became
anthems for racial harmony and
justice, and became a symbol
for non-violence.
"Joan has always been in
volved and interested in social
change for the better," said
lohnson "She participated in
Live Aid and the international
Amnesty tour a few years ago
But long before the music world
reawakened to the need for
social change and renewed in
terest in human rights issues.
)oan was out in front with the
civil rights movement, the anti
war movement, and advocating
other causes involving the prin
ciple of non-violent change
Baez has recorded 50 albums,
eight of which have reached
gold (500.000 copies sold)
status. Her latest LP is
"Recently.”

her integrity musically as she
has socially. Hut even so. she's
had excellent commercial sue
cess without compromising her
values For someone to sell as
many records as she has and
still keep her critical reputation,
especially in the folk music
field, is remarkable."
Johnson said that Baez's most
commercial album is probably
"Diamonds and Rust." which
was released in the early '70s.

Johnson "It's vibrant and rich
and subtle It's the kind of voice
which makes you realize that
the human voice is truly the
greatest musical instrument of
all
in addition to entertaining
and enlightening people with
her music, haez is still involved
in two of her own institutions
dedicated to non-violence and
social change She founded her
first institution in 1965. The
Resource Center For Non
Violence. and in 197‘i she
founded the Humanitas Interna
tional. a foundation dedicated
to helping poor people across
the world.
