Oregon tops UCLA statistically
but loses lopsided game 41-10

PASADENA, Calif-Faced
with its biggest game in recent
memory, the Oregon football
team blinked under the bright
lights of national scrutiny and
the dense smog of southern
California.
The Ducks committed seven
turnovers. Oregon's normally
sure-handed receivers dropped
passes they usually catch. The
special teams suffered through
numerous breakdowns.
The UCLA Bruins graciously
accepted the gift Oregon placed
on their doorstep, and humbled
the Ducks 41-10 at the Rose
Bowl in Pasadena on Saturday.
Representatives from six bowl
games were in attendance, as
was ESPN and Sports Il
lustrated. Although they denied
it, the Ducks appeared jittery
under the glare of the publicity.
“There were too many
mistakes. There are no excuses,
we just didn't get it done, and
we put the defense on the field
too long" said Oregon quarter
back Bill Musgrave. who threw

"Bill's just a freshman, and it

With the loss. Oregon fell to
4-2, 2-1 in the Pacific-10 Con
ference. The Ducks are percen
tage points behind runner-up
USC in third place in the
Pac-10. USC surprised
Washington in Seattle 37-23 to
improve to 3-1 in conference
play. 4-2 overall. The Ducks
stay on the road next week,
when they play Stanford (2-4.
1-2) in Palo Alto. Calif
IICLA took Oregon out of its
normal offense early. Outside
linebacker Camel I l.ake was too
quick for Oregon's guards, and
he poured thnnigh on Oregon's
patented roll-out pass formation
to sack Musgrave twice in the
first quarter and later forced a
fumble, which he recovered
“He was more of an athlete than
we could handle" Toledo said.
UCLA coach Terry Donahue
called l.ake the best outside
linebacker at UCLA in his 17

ting (Oregon's) offense, ”
Donahue said.
