rest of his team, is excused from his Friday classes. The
team spends most of the day traveling to the destination
of their Saturday game
Upon arriving in their opponent’s city, the team
checks into their hotel, practices, attends meetings and
then has dinner The remaining few hours of the night
an* free, hut since the players are expected in early to
get a good night's sleep in preparation for the game,
there is not much time for sight-seeing.
*1 have to follow a pretty tight
schedule, but it’s all worth it. I’m
getting a full scholarship and a
chance to play a sport I love. ’
— Geno Zahrie
"Most of us just relax in our hotel rooms." said
Zahrie. "There's not much time to do anything else So
we don't usually see much of the places we visit
The next morning the team rises early, has breakfast,
then arrives in the football stadium to spend the rest of
the morning going over assignments, getting taped and
dressed, and mentally preparing for the game
After the game, the players almost immediately go
hack to the airport to return to Eugene
Home games are a little less busy. On Fridays, after
practice, the team chocks into a hotel. “It's for the pur
pose of team unity." Zahrie said. "We're better able to
concentrate on the upcoming game."
After a team strategy meeting and dinner, the players
are treated to some entertainment, usually a film. But
it's not the latest Stephen Spielberg extravaganza
"We watch a football film, usually something like the
National Football league’s football follies, or
something like that." Zahrie said
After the film, it s back to their respective rooms
where the players think about the upcoming game. The
next morning is filled with more meetinga. more
preparation, taping, dressing, strategy and pep talks.
Then the game
Finally, after five days of keeping to a tight schedule.
Zahrie and the rest of his teammates have Saturday
night off after home games.
"That’s why home games are so fun." Zahrie said.
"Not only do we play with our fans in the stadium, but
we have that night off too ”
It’s only on Saturday night that Zahrie can enjoy
some of the pleasures that other college students
engage in on a regular basis.
"We go out with our girlfriends, see a movie, go to
parties — things like that." said Zahrie. "It’s the only
night of the week we have to have a little free time and
fun."
Then Sunday it’s back to business. The players watch
the game film, take care of their humps and bruises and
relax sore muscles with a team swim.
