Sports Playing for football team requires time, dedication By Nathan Deer Emerald Contributor Forget the glamour and the kudos. Life as a full scholarship athlete is as much business as fun. Take Geno Zahrie, for example The 6-foot-2-inch, 207-pound freshman fullback from South Eugene High School received a full football scholarship to play for the Ducks. So far, he's made good progress. He’s on the traveling squad and even sees action on the speciality teams. Hut Zahrie's schedule is enough to make a workaholic wary. "It's almost like being in the military.” he said. “My day is pretty well regimented. Hut that's necessary in order to get everything done. And it helps teach discipline too.” Zahrie. like all Oregon athletes on scholarship, carries twelve credits each term. In ad dition. he spends up to six hours a day practicing and thinking football. Zahrie's day begins early in the morning, at 7, when he gets up for breakfast. From 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Zahrie attends classes. His class schedule is similar to those of most freshmen. He has writing 121. a introductory speech class, a sociology class and a health class. After lunch. Zahrie joins the rest of the football team In a pre practice meeting Then at 3:05 it's time to put on the pads and go practice. The practice ses sions last up to three hours. After showering and dinner. Zahrie has study hall He and his teammates study for two hours, until 9:30. Tutors are available.
