ference. "The real question is
when will the faculty give
up . it is my hope the gover
nor and the Legislature will do
something about this
situation."
Olum warned that the real
danger of losing faculty does
not occur when the state's funds
suffer from a poor economy, but
when it is known that they have
a surplus of funds.
"People ought to realize that
it's much more serious now
because the economy is better,
and better salaries ought to be
possible," Olum said.
After the address faculty
members gathered for a recep
tion at the Museum of Art.
"We try to recruit faculty at
seven or eight thousand behind
the national average of any
other faculty pay," said Gene

year leave of absence to work at
another job so he could put his
son through college.
"It’s going to be increasingly
difficult to keep the faculty who
are really active researchers.”
Goldstein said.
Another subject Olum
covered was the record
breaking enrollment. Olum^said
the admission requirements
will probably remain the same,
but the University will not take
more students than it can han
dle, making the admissions pro
cess more competitive. As for
minority enrollment, the
University hopes to use the new
tuition-waiver and scholarship
programs to double the minori
ty student population.
Recruiting ethnic minority
faculty has presented a larger
problem, Olum said. However,
he pointed out in his speech
that women comprise 24 per
cent of the teaching faculty and
three of the top administrative
positions are held by women.
Olum also announced that a
University-wide committee is
being appointed to formulate
the University grievance pro
cedures, and he used the an
nouncement to discuss the mat
ter of sexual harassment, which
he said was a growing problem
on the campus.
In the area of planned con
struction, the next major project
will be the revamping of the
University Library, a project for
which the Legislature has given
"what might be regarded as a
promissory note” for funding.
Olum said. The legislature has
indicated library reconstruction
will be its number one capital
construction priority in 1989,
Olum added.
