Third World issues focus
of expert's lecture tonight

Michael Robins, an expert on
United States intervention in
Third World nations, lectured
on campus Tuesday and is
scheduled to speak again
tonight at 7 in the Fir Room. 167
KMU.
Robins, who has spent the
last four years on and off again
in Nicaragua, addressed the
issues surrounding U S. aid to
the Contras and the continuing
conflict present in that country
"What the United States
historically has not been able to
deal with is the internal
dynamics in these (Third
World) countries," Robins said.
Robins believes the United
States has inherent problems
dealing with developing coun
tries like Nicaragua because
American administrations tradi
tionally have not dealt with the
"gross disequilibrium in land
and wealth distribution" bet
ween the rich and the poor.
An anthropology major from
the University of California at
Santa Cruz. Robins left the an
thropological field of myth,
ritual and symbol when he
perceived "negative forces" in
the world impeding his efforts
to conduct traditional
anthropology.
“Every time I would try to
find a group of people to study
cultures as a regular an
thropologist would, 1 would
find some intense threat, either
from a Third World government
or a multinational corporation,
destroying these people over
night by taking away their
land." Robins said.
This interested him with pro
blems of social development
and revolution, particularly in
Central America, and he chang
ed his field of study to popular
participation in local organiza
tions — concentrating on in
digenous involvement in labor
unions, women's groups and
agrarian reform.
Going beyond what he plans
to address in his speech, Robins
expressed doubts that the
United States militarily will in
vade Nicaragua by the time
Ronald Reagan leaves office.
"Three months before the
Iran-Contra scandal broke in
November of 1986. many
analysts of Central America
thought tho probability of out
and-out U S. military interven
tion in Nicaragua was at its
height." Robins said
Around February and March
of 1987. many in Washington.
D C. thought the United States,
either bv supplying Honduran
forces or through direct involve
ment. would attempt an inva
sion of Nicaragua. Robins
explained.
He also views the current
five-nation peace plan between
countrias in Central America as
important "because historical
ly. for the first time. Central
American nations have gotten
together and said no' to Uncle
Sam — they have said no’ to
Ronald Reagan and have scrap
ped his peace plan." Robins
said.
