Another standout is senior
Annette Hand, who won the
conference title in both the
3.000 and 5.000 meters last
track season. Hand finished
fourth in the 3.000 and second
in the 5,000 at the NCAA track
championships last spring.
Other top runners include
Lisa Johnson, a senior who
finished 30th at the NCAAs last

last fall; Deanna Schiedler, a
fifth-year senior who finished

Heinonen said although the
women’s team is clearly a
favorite to win the conference,
he won't know what the team’s
chances are for an NCAA cham

“I'd like to improve on
(finishing fourth) and get in the
top three and come home with
some hardware.” Heinonen
said Hut the competition is so
intense in the Pac-10 and at
regionals that the team could
easily miss getting a bid. he

isn't far out of reach." Graves
said. “I’ve even talked with
some of the people on the team
and they think it can happen.
We don’t want to start saying
that yet just because you can
work with pressure, and it can
work against you."

Only two of last year's team's
top ten runners are returning
this fall (junior Carlton Jones
and senior Chad Bennion).
“We have a year or two of
rebuilding in front of us," said
Bill Dellinger, the men's head
coach.
Dellinger said the team will
be lucky to get u berth to na

doesn't expect it to happen. The
season is too young to predict
whether some individual run

for nationals. Dellinger said.

"We huve some talent, but
