was attempting to dilute provi
sions of the Eugene Nuclear
Free Zone ordinance approved
by voters in November. 1986.
The group, Keep Eugene
Nuclear Free, presented over
1.000 letters signed by Eugene
voters protesting any tampering
with the ordinance. The letters
acknowledged the Nuclear Free
Zone Task Force's redrafting of
the ordinance to clarify legal
issues but asked that the
substance of the ordinance not
be changed.
“The task force members
would like to remove from the
ordinance any substantial
limitation on the nuclear in
dustry. It's precisely this
substantial limitation on
nuclear weapons technology
that the people of Eugene voted
to support last November," said
Barbara Keller, a Keep Eugene
Nuclear Free spokeswoman.
"The mayor (Brian Obie) ap
pointed a task force that was ob
viously split from the beginn
ing. They were chosen because
they were in opposition." said
Deborah George, a member of
the citizen's group.
It s sort ot like appointing
prostitutes and drug pushers to
a task force to discuss how to
clean up downtown,” Keller
added.
