Your roommates have; con
tracted immobilizing cases of
the latest plague. While at
tempting to warm up the car to
take them to the hospital, you
discover the battery is dead, and
in a rage you lock the keys in
the car before searching for so
meone to jump start your vehi
cle. You spot a phone booth and
wonder who to call first: an am
bulance. a tow truck or a
locksmith.
Relax. One call, to the Office
of Public Safety, does it all.
Wedged between Straub Mall
and the Karl Complex, across
from the covered tennis courts,
is the Office of Public Safety,
which provides numerous ser
vices to the University
community.
"This office is a service
organization,” former police
Capt. Oakley Glenn said. "We
are charged with the safety, the
environmental health and the
security of the U of O campus."
Glenn coordinates the ac
tivities of the safety office, the
Office of Environmental Health,
and a campus branch of the
Eugene Police Department
However, the most visible
members of his staff are not
classified under any of these
divisions within the Office of
Public Safety.
Eighteen uniformed officers
share security and patrol duties
to keep the office o|>erating
around the clock. Respon
sibilities vary throughout the
day. but all officers provide
assistance to students or staff
members who need a jump start
or have locked keys in the car.
Officers are also available for
medical escorts to Sacred Heart
Hospital, The Eugene Clinic
and the Student Health Center if
individuals are too ill to walk or
to drive.
In addition to assisting
students and staff members, of
ficers lot k and secure
buildings, respond to emergen
cy calls on campus, and enforce
parking regulations.
"The main problem we have
during the day is the parking
situation." officer Susie Hunter
said.
.She summarized the situation
•is. "More cars, more bikes,
more students-more problems."
"The University is growing
and we're not matching the in
creases wit h proper
facilities,"she said
Another branch within the
Office of Public Safety is
responsible for the safe flow of
< ars, bikes and scooters
