Many activities kick off school year

An inaugural Freshman Can
vocation will be? the first in a
series of events that traditional
ly kick off the beginning of a
new school year
This first-time event, put
together by ASUO University
Affairs Coordinator Tim Kegan.
will give incoming freshmen a
chance to meet with the deans
of the University's professional
schools, as well as ASUO Presi
dent Kasey Brooks.
The Freshman Convocation
takes place the first day of New
Student Week on Monday.
Sept. 21. in the EMU Ballroom
at 2:30 p.m Highlighting the
event will be remarks by
University President Paul
Olum.
Two days later on Wednes
day. Sept 23. the annual ASUO
Street Faire begins. The
festivities include booths offer
ing a wide range of arts and
crafts, as well as samplings of
different foods Entertainment
ranging from musicians to jug
glers will also be featured in the
three-day event, which con
cludes on Friday. Sept. 25. the
last day of fall registration
The Faire will lie open from
10:00 a m to 4:00 p m. all throe
days.
On Monday, Oct. 5. this
year's University Convocation
joins in the bicentennial
celebration of the U S. Constitu
tion Stanley Katz, a Bicenten
nial Professor of the History of
American Law and Liberty at
Princeton University, will
deliver the keynote address at
2:00 p m in the EMU Ballroom.
Katz, who also is president of
the American Council of learn
ed Societies, will focus his
speech on "Constitutionalism
and the Constitution.” Follow
ing his address, University
faculty members will lead
several seminars at various loca
tions on campus. The day con
cludes with an evening of music
and drama celebrating this
200th anniversary of the U S.
Constitution.
Then beginning Monday.
Oct. 19, the annual five-day Fall
Symposium begins. This year
the Symposium coincides with
National Drug and Alcohol
Awareness week.
Monday's topic is physical
fitness. One of the speakers
scheduled to appear is
Residence Hall Program Assis
tant Vanessa Sykes.
Tuesday will feature a panel
discussion on mental wellness.
ASLJO Events Coordinator
Angeline Chong said she hopes
to have representatives from
Sacred Heart General Hospital.
Eugene Clinic, and White Hird
Clinic, in order to provide a
diverse perspective on the
issues.
Chong said the day’s discus
sions will focus on the legal
status of the mentally unstable.
Wednesday’s topic will ad
dress safe sex. Highlighting the
day's activities will be an ap
pearance by Richard and Debbie
Carper. The Eugene couple are
former intravenous drug users
who both have contracted
AIDS-related complex, or ARC.
Thursday’s subject is drug
and alcohol awareness. Greek
Adviser Neal Dorow will speak,
as well as Michael l.eeds, who
coordinates drug and alcohol
awareness programs. Groups
such as Greek organizations and
dormitories utilize his programs
to gain a better understanding
and awareness of potential drug
and alcohol problems.
The final day. Friday Oct 23.
is tentatively scheduled to be a
wrap-up day.
