Variety of housing options open
By Ingrid White
Of lh* tnwtilf
A campus is not complete
without students occupying the
space it provides. Hut where do
all of the students go as the sun
goes down and classes come to
a close for the day? For every in
dividual taste and desire the
University and its surrounding
area offer a variety of housing
options.
For those who enjoy being
dose to all the University has to
offer, there are residence halls
located right on campus, A total
of six residence halls are run by
the University. Five are located
on campus while the University
inn is located on Patterson
street, only five blocks away.
Residence halls offer nineteen
meals a week and furnished
rooms. Those living in the
residence halls have access to
computer terminals, vending
machines, and washers and
dryers.
The University Inn provides
even more services than
residence halls. The rooms at
the U1 are larger and there is a
weekly maid service. Each room
is also equipped with a shower
and a telephone.
All of the residence halls re
quire a nine-month contract

along with a $50 deposit. For
the 1987-88 school year, the
multiple room rate is $2,368.
which is about $265 per month
for full room and board. The
single room rate is $3,075.
For single students
cooperative living is among the
least expensive. Students living
in cooperatives share in the
household duties and serve as
the management of the
household.
Surrounding the University
campus are six different
cooperatives. Philadelphia
House is a Christian men's
cooperative. Christus House is a
Christian coed cooperative, and
Chelsea House is a Newman
Center residence. The Campbell
Club, Parr Tower, and Janet
Smith are all coed living
residences.
Within the cooperatives
students work together to run
and maintain the houses. The
number of students in each
house varies between 24 and 42
depending on the house.
Rooms in the cooperatives are
singles, doubles, and triples in
some houses. Prices for
cooperatives are approximately
$2.(K>() for a double and $2,400
for a single each year.
Fraternities and sororities are
another available option. The
University Greek system con
sists of 17 fraternities and 12
sororities. Both organizations
require that its members go
through rush activities before
being accepted. As a part of
rush, interested students meet
the existing members of the
fraternities and sororities and
visit the houses.
The average cost for a frater
nity or sorority is $2,700 per
year.
For students with families the
University operates 650 apart
ments in three locations around
campus.
Family student housing is
available to married and single
parent families.
Openings occur infrequently
and applications are accepted
only once each term.
Amazon contains two
bedroom, unfurnished units for
$120 a month. Westmoreland
has one and two bedroom fur
nished units for $115 and $144
per month. Hast Campus Hous
ing consists of 120 units that
range from studio-size to five
bedroom houses.
Off-campus housing provides
a myriad of options for
students. There are houses,
duplexes, apartments, quads,
trailers, and rooms for rent.
Houses and duplexes are the
hardest to find. One bedroom
places tend to be the most
scarce and can range in price
from $180-270. Two-bedroom
places go for $230-375 and three
or four bedroom places are
about $325-600 per month
Apartment complexes
abound in large amounts in the
Eugene/Springfield area. Apart
ments closest to campus tend to
be the most expensive.
Studios range in price from
$140-200 per month. One
bedroom apartments range in
price from $160-250 per month.
Two bedroom apartments are
$240-330 each month and three
bedroom apartments start at
$350.
Many rentals require nine to
twelve-month leases. Cleaning
deposits, fees, and security
deposits may also be required.
Some rentals do not allow pets
or children.
Quads are another option
chosen by many students. A
quad consists of a single sleep
ing room and shared kitchen
facilities with three other units.
Bathroom facilities may be
private or shared.
Prices for quads range from
$150-280 per month. A lease is
required for most quads, but
students may find another per
son to take over the lease if they
want to move out before the
lease is up.
Shared housing is a largely
popular option among students.
Costs are rather inexpensive,
ranging from $110-175 each
month. All that is needed are a
place to share and people will
ing to be roommates and share
their space.
Along with each type of hous
ing comes advantages and
disadvantages. Marie Taylor, an
elementary education student,
found that living in the dorms
and a cooperative were nice
because there were always peo
ple around "But.” she said,
"always having people around
can also have a negative effect.
"Living in a cooperative gave
me more independence than
living in the dorms, but it also
gave me more responsibility.
Taylor said.
"Basically. I have to rate
group living far above the isola
tion and loneliness of apartment
living." said Joel Diegleman. a
senior in religious studies.
"When it comes down to liv
ing in the dorms vs. cooperative
living. I'd have to say that
cooperative living is more
realistic whereas the dorms
become their own sterile
universe." Diegleman said.
When looking for housing
many sources can be used,
Newspapers, realtors, lawn
signs, and word of mouth are a
few good sources. Also, the
ASUO has made available an
Off-Campus Housing office to
help students find what they an;
looking for.
