IFC reviews child care subsidy eligibility levels
By Carolyn l.ambersan
CM I Hr hnvrald
The Incidental Kee Commit
tee met Wednesday afternoon to
decide on changes in the child
care subsidy program, and the
ASUO Executive saw defeat for
the first time since taking office
in May.
The child care subsidy pro
gram receives $80,000 to help
needy parent: students defray
the cost of child care while at
tending the University.
According to the ASUO Ex
ecutive Coordinator Susan
Sowards, the ASUO Child Care
Task Force requested the
elimination of a subsidy for
parents who are determined to
have no need or are SI,000 in
the black in the quarter aid is
figured.
The task force, in conjunction
with the Executive, also recom
mended a student's Guaranteed
Student I-nan not Ire used in
determining a student's need
level.
According to the proposal
submitted to the I PC, the sub
sidy need level is baaed on in
formation provided by the
financial aid office.
The task force determined
that this system would penalize
students who didn't accept
(ISIji by reducing their subsidy
while they received no extra
aid. according to the proposal.
The proposal also says the
Financial Aid office is willing
to provide alternative figures
that do not Include CSLa at all
However, a problem may
come of that, the report says.
The task force has no way of
figuring the impact of the the
new formulas. By including the
GSL, some students who need
aid will be ineligible. If need is
determiner! without use of the
GSL. some parents will jump in
to a higher need category while
others who were not eligible in
the past will receive some aid.
The committer! unanimously
agreed not to include the GSL in
figuring need, but was divided
on the elimination of the no
need subsidy category.
Committee member Sandra
Thompson moved to eliminate
the 10 percent subsidy for
parents who have no need, but
the motion failed for lack of a
second.
Susie Blanchette, speaking on
behalf of the Amazon Co
operative child care and the
Child Care and Development
Centers, said this move was to
ensure the subsidy program
