Science program opens new frontiers

Experience program. July 17
through July 31.
Participants will have the op
portunity to work with interna
tionally recognized researchers,
according to Kalph Harnhard.

"Participants can expect to
gain a clear understanding of
how scientists work and of to
day's science frontiers in such
areas as molecular biology,
plate tectonics and atomic
physics." Bernhard said.
"It’s their chance to sample
the cutting edge of science, to
hear about scientific ad
vancements from some of the
people who make them and to
view science as a viable career
choice," Harnhard added.
Students will gain first hand
experience through lectures and
laboratory work in biology,
chemistry, physics, artificial in
telligence applications and
alternative technologies. They
also will la* introduced to
sophisticated research tools us
ed at the University such as
lasers, electron microscopes, a
linear accelerator and
telescopes.
Participants also will take
weekend field trips to the newly
remodeled Oregon Institute of
Marine iiiologv at Charleston
and the Pine Mountain Obser
vatory at Bend.
Kugenc high school students
selected to participate are Anne
Dickinson, daughter of John
and Cynthia Dickinson, and
Derik Broekhoff. son of |an and
Marna Broekhoff. Both are
seniors at South Kugenc High
School. The third participant.
Nayma Glenn, is a junior at
Willamette High School and is
the daughter of Nora and
Roland Glenn.
Anne Dickinson's area of
scientific Interest is
biochemistry. She presently has
a 3.89 G.P.A.
‘‘Within biology and
chemistry courses you have to
get what knowledge you can
from normal biology courses
which have biochemistry in (the
structure of the course at South
Eugene High School)," Dickin
son said.
"That (biochemistry) might be
my career," Dickinson added.
Dickinson is also interested in
archeology and
paleoanthropology.
Nayma Glenn's area of scien
tific interest is astronomy. She
presently has a 3.64 G.P.A.
"There are only general level
courses (in astronomy at
Willamette High School).’’
Glenn said. "But physics and
chemistry deal with some areas
of astronomy." Glenn said.
Glenn also is interested in
chemistry and the science of
light. "There was some
holography being done last
year.” Glenn said. She hopes to
see it again this year. The lasers
excite her interest, she said.
