Emerald's Athletes of the Year
For work ethic, Landerholm was tops

Choosing the outstanding
female athlete of the year was
not an easy task.
Athletes like volleyball player
Teri Kramer and tracksters An
nette Hand and Penny ('.raves
each had superior seasons. The
Oregon Daily Emerald's selec
tion of basketball's L.auri
Landerholm recognizes an
athlete whose performance
stands above the rest.
landerholm epitomizes the
college athlete who surpasses
others in achievement simply
because she works harder
perfecting her skills than
others.
"I work hard to prove to
myself how good I can be —
that's enough to drive me right
there,” Landerholm said. ”l.ast
summer. 1 realized that the
team's success would have to
do with how I performed.”
Landerholm's a c -
complishments speak for
themselves.
She was chosen as the Pacific
It) Conference Player of the
Year, led the Ducks with 18.2
points a game and established a
single-season school record for
assists with 171.
The senior from Gresham
completed her collegiate career
as Oregon's all-time assist
leader (607), third-leading
scorer (1.783 points) and fifth
liest career rebounder (819).

landerholm was also selected
to the Kodak All-District VIII
team fur the second-straight
year.
When we last I e f t
landerholm, it was a teary at

McArthur Court. Amid the sor
row of losing last March’s
NCAA tourney game to Ohio
Stale University. 7 t> - fi 2 .
Uindcrholm had difficulty ad
dressing the media. Her eyes
reflected a spirit drowned by
defeat.
1) u t in retrospect,
Landerholm will be
remembered for a spectacular
season that secured her a place
as one of Oregon's best ever
Ami that's worth another look.
Throughout her years at
Oregon. Landerholm was the
case study of an athlete who
was dedicated to becoming lad
ter. rather than just good. Her
time spent in the gym ■ outside
of required team practices —
was characteristically time
devoted to fundamentals. It was
often r e g i m e n t e d a n d
repetitious. "The la-st athletes
spend the most time at it lauri
did this." said her coach. Elwin
Heiny.
On the court. l-anderholm

without physically dominating
it.
When she got into her
rythvm. which was most of the
time, she was virtually unstop
pable. Her ability to score was

Happily married and a
physical edu< ation major with a
3.2 graiie point average,
l-amlerholm looks forward to
continuing hur basketball
carreer. Next week she plans on
treing one of to to t.ri American
women who will pursue play in
Italy.

My most pressing question
for Mr. Campbell is. "Clan we
