Artist seeks funds to finish project 'The Box/ 'Noon' represent
_variety of real-life, comedy

halls, a giant hand points up
ward.
Constructed of plywood and
masonite and painted with
housepaints. standing 12 feet
high, the hand remains un
finished until the artist raises
the money to finish it.
The work constitutes the first
portion of a 24-foot-long display
created by Joe Wayman, a
graduate student in visual arts.
The entire piece will consist of a
greatly enlarged newspaper
photo of Ronald Reagan, his in
dex finger pointing skyward,
his mouth open, and a helmeted
soldier at his side.
Wayman has carried the
photo-mechanical method of
reproducing the newspaper im
age into his design. The dots
that comprise the half-tone pro
cess float like balloons around
the president's so-far disem
bodied hand.
In regard to his use of a
newspaper photo as the basis
for his image, he says, “In my
earlier work I had been using
collage and found objects. What
can say more about our culture
than the things that are
generated by it? Our media
culture generates objects which
contain truths about our
culture. This photo sums up the
whole Reagan regime.
After the completion of this
project, Wayman intends to
build another identical display,
five times the size of this one
“I think the size will over
whelm people.” he says. "It
will be the Mount Rushmore of
our time. The two-dimensional

the facade we are supposed to
be unaware of. He’s the fake
reality. The real reality of
militarism goes on behind him
But we spend our time dealing
with him. the sham president."

theatrical group, is presenting
two one-act comedies titled
"The Box" and "Noon" at the
lalin American Cultural Center
weekend evenings through June

Kavelin, is about two men who

meet on a street corner in New
York City. Fritz, played by Ken
Hof. is a meticulous, uptight
man who lives by a contract of
commitment with his girlfriend
Pam. played by Catherine
Cuerin.
When Pam Jilts Fritz and
leaves him crying outside on
the corner. Richie, a homeless
man (Ravetto) who lives in a
box, pops out to console him.
Fritz spills his guts to Richie
about his troubles with Pam
while Richie talks of his great
life in the box on the corner.
"This is only my summer
home I have a mansion in Creat
Neck," Richie says.
It turns out Richie and Fritz
are old friends from high school
and still have a lot in common.
"The Box" is a well
performed original play with
good visual effects. It asks the
age-old question about the true
meaning of life and does a good
job trying to answer it through
the real ness of the characters
The second feature, "Noon."
has been termed "adult enter
tainment" by Front Row
Magazine Written by Terrance
McNally. "Noon” is about five
different people who answer an
advertisement for a sexual en
counter at noon on the same
day.
This comedy requires an open
mind about the many different
types of sexual practices in the
world today. Kerry, played by
Kavetto. is a homosexual man
waiting for a man called Dale,
whose ad he has answered
Asher, a straight, wimpy sort of
character played bv Dan Bruno,
enters second looking for a
woman called Dale. Kerry tries
to pick up on Asher and gives
him drugs Upon hearing a
noise, Kerry ducks out leaving a
drugged Asher to fight off
Allegra (Uuerin)
Allogra is a nymphomaniac
who has answered an ad for
French lessons placed by a per
son called Dale whom she takes
Asher to lie. She is a bored
housewife from Flushing whose
husband is an intellectual
The final characters who
enter this. bizarre group are
Cecil and Beryl, a sadistic hus
tiaud and wife clad in leather
answering an ad from the
elusive Dale
I (of and Renee Margolin are
funny in a frightening sort of
way as they take out their
whips, chains and handcuffs.
"Noon" takes a look at our
fears and desires in a humorous
way. It is for those with open
minds who enjoy variety.
