chosen to receive the Univer
sity's Graduate Teaching
Fellow awards for outstanding
teaching for 1988-87. They will
each receive $500 awards June
14 during commencement at
Autzen Stadium. Kathleen
O'Fallon, a doctoral degree stu
dent in English, and Diane
Wiese, a doctoral degree stu
dent in physical education and
human movement studies, have
been awarded honorable men
tion and will receive cash prizes
of $150 each
Three University students
have won summer internships
with the Disney All-American
College Marching Hand. They
are tuba player Cameron Gates,
baritone saxaphonist Clarl Poole
and trumpet player Dana
Heilman
The late Edward Herbert, a
former University biochemist
and chemistry professor, was
elected posthumously to the Na
tional Academy of Sciences on
April 28 for achievements in
original research. Herbert died
Feb. 19, 1987.
Diane Hawley, an assistant
professor of chemistry, is one of
18 biomedical researchers in the
country named as a 1987 Searle
Scholar. She will receive a
three-year grant of $180,000.
Rogena Degge. a University
art education professor, has
been named the National
Higher Education Art Educator
of the Year by the National Art
Education Associa
tion. Professor |ane Gray
and Adjunct Professor Patricia
Harris, both in the biology
department, have been elected
as fellows of the American
Association for the Advance
ment of Science.
Graduate teaching fellow
Margaret Bayless will receive
$500 for winning this year's
Outstanding Graduate Student
Teacher of Composition Award.
Candidates for the award were
nominated by students, and
Bayless was chosen as winner
by a committee in the English
department. Runners-up John
Coletta and Christi Sutphin will
each receive $50.
The Navy has awarded a grant
of up to $250,000 to chemistry
Professor David Johnson for his
research into solid-state
reactions.

been chosen from among
sophomores for service and
scholarship. They are:

Delta Delta sorority received the
Burt Brown Barker Vice
Presidential Cup for the living
group with the highest
undergraduate grade point in
dex; Caitlin Cameron received
the Ray Hawk Award for
outstanding member of the
senior class; Alison Gundry
received the Senior Woman
Recognition Award form the
American Association of
University Women; Mathewaon
won the Koyl cup for male
juniors showing all-round pro
gress in leadership, service and
academic achievement, and
JoEllyn Murillo received a
similar award.the Gerlinger
Cup. for female juniors: Karen
Engels received the Bess
Templeton Cristman Award, a
full tuition grant: lerry Olson
and Emil Wilson both won full
tuition grants from the Maurice
Harold Hunter Leadership
