Time for some baseball heckling
Welcome to a potpourri of sports tidbits. .
BASEBALL: If the Portland Beavers keep los
ing. Seattle Mariners’ owner George Argyros
(soon to be the owner of the San Diego Padres)
may just want to buy them He’d then have the
worst team in both the minors and the ma
jors. . Speaking of the hapless Beavers, the only
reason their players continue to collide with each
other is to get on the highlight films on the late
night news. . .The door is being unlocked, and
the handle is being turned. Yes. if the Chicago
Cubs win a few more games, society will lie
From the Sidelines

desecrated once again by those annoying Cub
fans who only come out of the closet to express
their sentiments of loyalty when their team is at
or near the top of the National League
East...Teams to keep an eye on — the U>s
Angeles Dodgers (ugh:) and the New York Mets
(ugh!). On second thought, let's just hope both
teams fade into their respective cellars. . .Don’t
count Boston out yet. The Yanks, Tigers,
Brewers, lays, Indians and Orioles could all
declare Chapter 11. Hey, Texaco did it!
If I had to choose favorite college nicknames,
they would be the following: Terriers (Boston
University), Bisons (Bucknell). Chippewa* (Cen
tral Michigan), Fightin' Blue Hens I Delaware),
Golden Flashes (Kent State), Thundering Herr!
(Marshall) and Leathernecks (Western Il
linois) . . . If Sugar Kay l.eonard fights again, we'll
all know it’s just for the money He beat llagler
and has nothing left to prove . .I'm beginning to
miss the IJSFL. For me, spring will never be the
same... Wouldn't it be funny if Oklahoma
linebacker Brian Bosworth was picked by the
New York Giants He wouldn't have a prayer of
starting. .Allowing fans to vote for starters in
the Major league Baseball All-Star game is
ridiculous. I-el'a see the best, not the most
popular. . It's getting to be that people watch
auto racing to see a crash just like they view
hockey to see a fight. . .A recent change in the
NBA lottery assures the the team with the worst
record, this year it's the Los Angeles Clippers, of
picking no lower than fourth in the NBA draft. I
still think they'd la? better off in the CBA A
fellow in Rome. Ga. recently played nine holes of
golf and scored a 43 — with a putter. . . Alalmma
basketball coach Wimp Sanderson on whether
he's met sports agent Norby Walters, who has
said he gives money to college athletes: "No. but
I'd like to, just him and me. in a room by
ourselves. One of us wouldn't come out ." Sounds
like Wimp is no wimp
Best joke about sports this week goes to talk
show host David Letterman. "Apparently, the
highest-paid team in the NBA is the lars Angeles
Inkers. But the Phoenix Suns have a higher street
value."
