New Saferide status,
but same program
Project Saferide became an independent ASUO program
last Friday; it is no longer under authority of the ASUO Ex
ecutive, and as an independent organization, it now receives
its own share of incidental student fees.
This is good and had The ASUO Executive is new free
to concentrate on other activities; however, some problems
with the Saferide program remain.
As an afterthought, it's apparent Saferide had been
receiving incidental student fees all along, albeit indirectly.
Oist week former Project Saferide Coordinator Shannon
Meehan stated the program received its income from "fund
raising, donations and advertising, not from incidental
fees,"
However. ASUO President Steve Nelson conceded the
ASUO office and staff spent time working on the project.
The ASUO is fee-funded Moreover. Saferide received a
$;t.(MK) payroll transfer from the t«M7-HH ASUO Executive in
addition to the awarded to Saferide by the Incidental
Fee Committee.
We agree wiln tne scope oi catenae — to proviae a
"safe, convenient way for women to move around" the cam
pus and the University environs after dark and serve as an ef
fective rape prevention program.
According to a recent report compiled by Project
Saferide coordinators, more than 1,000 women used the
shuttle service last term. Similarly, students demonstrated
strong support for the program in a random sample poll con
ducted last week.
Clearly, students support l*roject Saferide. Yet certain
aspects of the program should lx? reviewed. For instance,
one of the long-term goals of Saferide was and is to become
self-supporting through user-fee subscriptions, advertising
and sponsorships from businesses. To date, the latter two
goals have yet to be realized.
According to the original goal statement written in
January 198t>. "advertising revenue from the sale of space
(on the vans)... is expected to be very valuable.' Hut Acting
Saferide Coordinator l.aurie Hooper said the project has yet
to receive any income from the sale of ad space — in fact, the
project has even lost revenue from failed attempts at
advertising.
This, however, is a minor setback and can be remedied
through lietter advertising management.
Sponsorships from businesses also have fallen below
expectations. Hooper said the project has yet to receive even
one business sponsor. But this. too. may lx; remedied
through better marketing techniques.
As Saferide’s recent report indicated, the program is an
expanding project and will need more resources as time goes
by. Because Saferide is now under the 1FC budgetary pro
tress. next year's coordinators and staff should make a
greater effort to keep the operating cost down. The program
would do well to consider the advice of Steve Frichette and
Donna Cooper and consider renting the! vans to other g.oups
when not being used for Saferide.
Of greater concern is the all-women drivers policy.
Under IhX] funding guidelines, no group can receive funding
if it excludes any segment of the University community from
participating in any aspect of a program. Obviously, the cur
rent Saferide policy regarding all-women drivers is in viola
tion of I PC funding guidelines and may have to be reformed.

More facts
I've done something that I
assume homosexuals hope
nobody else does: I checked in
to the claims within the "Gay
Plague" pamphlet.
The libraries at the University
contain many of the medical
journals and books used as
sources.
One hotly contested claim
relates to homosexual inales
and their average levels of pro
miscuity. The Hell and Wein
burg research listed in the pam
phlet seemed to back that point
quite well.
I found other (very current)
sources testifying to high levels
of promiscuity generally ex
isting. regardless of AIDS,
among a huge percentage of
male homosexuals.
As for VD rates: Three
quarters of U.S. AIDS cases
have appeared in homosexual
males, and up to 50 percent of
San Francisco’s homosexual
males may harbor the AIDS
virus according to recent
reports.
And Devin Adair’s book,
"The Homosexual Network.”
stated that San Francisco's VD
rate was 22 times the national
average just a few years ago.
What about rather odd sexual
behaviors? Epidemics of
amoeba infections, intestinal
parasites and the Gay Bowel
Syndrome could be due to rim
ming (oral contact with the
anus).
The book "The Gay Report”
listed that most male homosex
ual respondents to this study
engaged in this activity at least
once, about a quarter admitted
to fisting (insertion of the fist in
to the rectum) before.
Check "Medical and Shrgical
Risks in iiandballing: Implica
tion of an Inadequate Socializa
tion Process" in the journal of
Homosexuality (HUH) for a
more explicit description of this
behavior.
We have been tol 1 to become
"educated" on theie issues. I
couldn't agree more.

Punch drunk
I am writing about the selec
tion of KFNW as the sports pro
gramming station. One of the
greatest aspects of Oregon is its
openness and dedication to pro
gressive values
Hy awarding the rights thus,
the school has chosen to ignore
their conscience long enough to
make a with Southern
California-based broadcast in
terests. KXL and KPNVV repre
sent "prescribed” (or proscrib
ed) choices fur this area. It takes
very little to trace the affilia
tions of those involved.
The obvious and more honest
choice would have been KDUK.
Their format is progressive and
the management honest, and
they lack a "hidden" motive for
broadcasting the games.
That KDUK was artificially
excluded proves that the
University is eager to show
loyalty to elements that have
guaranteed it "a piece of the ac
tion” when the financially
starved Eugene area is
developed by outside interests.
It is this economic despera
tion that worries me. Will the
true fans of Oregon sports be
happy with this? If the Duck’s
lose, will they enjoy having
Jerry tell them that they can just
put it on their Nordstrom’s
charge account?
I am certain that the greater
public is not aware of the true
consequences of these continual
back-room "deals." Oregon
sports fans haven't been
blinded to these
consequences.. .yet.
It takes a little longer to be
honest, it costs a little more to
protect the environment, and it
takes a greater effort to keep a
decent place in an indecent
world.
I would ask that they consider
not giving up their future to a
rigged present, and the punch
drunk horse that it flew in on.
