Ducks falter under 4th-ranked UCLA in double-header

After .1 double-heacler split
with sixth-ranked University of
California Sunday, the Oregon
softball team could not repeat
the magic as it dropped a pair of
conference games to fourth
ranked UCLA Monday at Howe
Field, (>-:i and 2-0
The Bruins jumped on the
Ducks early in game when
UCLA’s Sandra Arledge lined
the second pitch of the gami
over the rigid field fence for a
solo homer and a quick 1 -0 lead.
Oregon pitcher Sue Voeller
then walked Lisa llankerd and
gave up a single to Janice Parks,
moving Ilankerd to third.
With no outs. C i n a
llolstrom's fly ball to left field
jumped the park for a three-run
homer and a 4-0 UCLA lead.
Voeller was “just a little"
shook up after serving up two
round-trippers in the first
inning.
“Kspecially the first one,”
she said. “It was a good pitch. 1
threw it low down at her knees.
When it went out. 1 thought ‘uh
oh. we’re in trouble.”’
Coach Teresa Wilson agreed.
“Naturally, it's going to rattle
you a little when you give up
four runs on hits like that in tin
first inning. They weir good

The UCLA lead was narrowed
to 4-T but Oregon could come
no closer as the Bruins tai ked
on two runs in the fourth to
make it t>-4 and round out the
scoring in game one.
