Crew wins four events
The Oregon crew team captured four team events at the
Redwood Sprints at Humboldt State University in Eureka,
Calif, on Saturday. The women’s lightweight varsity and
novice 4-rower teams won first place, as did the men's varsity
8-rower team and lightweight 4-rower team. The men’s
novice 8-rower squad received second-place honors. Both the
men and women will compete at the Portland Regatta this
Saturday
Oregon baseball's three games with Western Washington
State University were rained out over the weekend. The
Ducks travel to I.inn-Benton Community College in Albany
Sunday for a doubleheader.
Oregon’s lacrosse club rattled University of Puget
Sound, 24-2, over the weekend. They will participate in the
28-team field at the Pacific Northwest Lacrosse Association
Invitational at Delta Park in Portland. The Ducks will meet
the University of Washington for first-round action at 8:80
a.m. this Saturday.
“Bubba’s,” the Oregon women’s soccer squad, defeated
Omega. 3-1. in city league competition Monday. Julie Ander
son led the way with two goals. Oregon plays Springfield
Monday at Cal Young Middle School.

PSU gets another thorn jabbed
in its side as Ducks sweep again

The Oregon softball team con
tinued to frustrate Fort land
State University as the Ducks
defeated the Vikings for the fifth
and sixth times of the year with
a doubleheader sweep Tuesday
at University Field, 8-1 and 8-0.
Oregon coach Teresa Wilson
commented that playing a team
six times in one year has its
good and had points.
With a (i-0 mark against the
Vikings, Wilson said, “you
have a tendency to let down,
and not get up for games like
this, but we did a great job to
day. We got up early and we did
a good job staying up.”
The Ducks woke up late in the
initial inning of the first game,
however, as the first three Vik
ing hatters reached base safely,
loading the bases with no outs.
Some timely fielding and
solid defensive work got the
Ducks out of the inning
unscathed.
The Oregon bats came alive
early too. hut the Vikings had a
little more trouble getting out of
the inning.
Vicki Fry led off with single,
Paula Barnes and Capi Lynn
both drew walks off PSU pitcher
Traci Moen. and suddenly the
Ducks had the bases loaded
with no one out.
Kira Lewis, who has been a
nightmare for opposing pitchers
in the month of April, drilled a
pitch into right field which got
i>v outfielder Paula Henkel and
rolled to the fence. Three runs
came in, and the Ducks had all
it would need for game one.
For insurance, Oregon added
another three runs in the bottom
of the third inning, including a
Stacye Gustafson triple which
scored Lynn and Ronda
McKenzie.
Sue Voeller threw seven
strong innings for her 11th win
of the year, giving up a run on
three hits. "I pitched more con
sistently today.” said Voeller.
”1 felt I started pitching more
consistently in (last weekend’s)
tournament, and that warmed
me up.”
The hot-hitting Lewis went
two-for-four and drove in four
runs, and Gustafson added
another two hits and two RBI's,
Pitcher Sony Schroeder and
the Ducks made quick work of
the nightcap, as the day only
grew worse for PSU.

After being retired 1-2-3
through the first two innings,
Oregon erupted for eight runs in
the third, nearly batting
through the order twice.
With the bases loaded and
one run already in. Cheryl Cor
yll’s line-drive single scored
Barnes and set the stage for
Voeller’s ground-rule double to
left field, which scored Lewis
and Gustafson with the third
and fourth runs.
The fun was only beginning
for Oregon, as Schroeder
followed with a double to
center, scoring Coryell. Three
walks led to three additional
runs before the Ducks were
retired with the bases still
loaded.
Vikings pitcher Jeanne Liv
ingston walked seven Oregon
batters in the inning alone, and
PSU was assured of leaving
Kugene still winless against the
Ducks.
Wilson said Schroeder’s per
formance in the nightcap was
“as good as she’s thrown all
year."
“Kverything was working
well today.” Schroeder said. “It
was my best game. 1 feel a lot
more confident now."
Came two was called after
five innings, due to a seven-run
rule limit. PSU will get two
more shots at Oregon on May 5
in Portland, while the Ducks
could use more eight-run
outings in upcoming home
games against nationally
ranked UCLA and the Universi
ty of California on Sunday.
