Hearing set on proposal to revamp teacher education
Major changes in the teacher
education programs at Oregon’s public
4-year colleges and universities will be
the topic of a public hearing in Spr
ingfield Wednesday.
The changes were proposed by the
Legislative Committee on Teacher
Education, and endorsed by the State
Board of Higher Education.
I he new teacher-education program
would require elementary- and
secondary-education majors to complete
five years of college and earn a graduate
level, professional master's degree in
teacher education.
Undergraduates would not be able to
major in education if the proposal is
adopted.
Prospective teachers would be re
quired to earn a bachelor's degree in an
area outside of education.
In addition, the new teacher-education
program would require graduates to pass
a subject-matter examination in their
respective disciplines.

year teacher-education program.
Oregon currently has five teacher
education programs in the state.
Oregon State University and Western
Oregon State ('allege offer a joint pro
gram in education. Kastern Oregon and
Southern Oregon state colleges each of
fer education degrees, as do Portland
State University and the University of
Oregon.
I’he changes in teacher-education pro
grains have the support of Oregon Senate
President John kitzhaber and Mouse
Speaker Vera Katz, co-chairpersons of
the Legislative teacher-edncation
committee.
Supporters of tin* plan say it will great
ly improve the quality of teachers and
the status of the teaching profession in
Oregon's public schools.
