Strike
Continued from Page t
pads, requesting that schools re
main open, negotiations con
tinue and that a settlement be
reached by Tuesday.
Negotiating teams met Satur
day afternoon and evening and
resumed talks Sunday after
noon. The two teams are
meeting separately at the
Hilton. On Saturday, several
proposals were exchanged bet
ween the two groups. Details of
the proposals have not been
released.
State mediator John Vale said
he was willing to continue the
talks as long as progress was be
ing made. Discussions on Satur
day began with the bargaining
teams meeting together in the
same room, the first time the
groups have met face to face in
nine months.
Meanwhile, about 65 Eugene
School District high school
students gathered Saturday
morning at Alton Baker Park to
protest the strike and press for a
settlement. Students marched
from the park to the U.S. Cour
thouse in downtown Eugene
carrying signs with “Stop the
Strike” messages.
Eugene teachers will begin
their strike at 6 a.m. on Wednes
day if a settlement is not
reached.
