and squaring off against Univer
sity of California in what may be
considered one of the program's
toughest months to date.
“I don’t think the team score
will be close,” Heinenon com
mented. "They've got some key
athletes that will give us good
competition.”
"The next three weeks we can
gut it out in the team scores.”
he added.
One of those athletes
Heinenon mentioned is high
jumper Vicki Borsheim. last
year’s NorPac Conference
champion with a season best of
6-0. One of the few points to
Washington’s favor in this
series is the long jump, an event
the Huskies have won since
1977, when these two schools
started competing against each
other in a dual-meet format. The
Ducks will counter that streak
with Camille )ampolsky (6-1
Vi), who should be healthy after
being kept out of action last
Saturday with a leg strain.
There should be a real battle
for the top spots in the long and
triple jump events. Oregon’s
Janell Thorsland (19-8 V«) and
Julie Goodrich (19-7 */«) will at
tempt to outleap Kendra Keller
(19-7 V«. All three of Oregon’s
triple jumpers exceeded 38 feet
last Saturday, led by Goodrich's
school record-setting 39-6.
Washington’s top performer is
Angie Tasker (38-4).
The Huskies will certainly
pose a problem in the javelin.
Defending NCAA champion
Helena Uusitalo will be making
her first appearance this season,
but she threw 189-3 in this meet
last year and has a personal best
of 197-4. The next two Husky
throwers have better season
marks than Oregon’s best out
put. 147-5 by Monica Beumer.
Washington's Meg Jones,
who doubles in the shotput and
discus, has already qualified in
the shotput (50-4 V«) for the
NO. A A indoor meet.
The Ducks also will en
counter some stiff competition
in the 800-meters, with
Washington’s Sarah Bolender
(2:08.23) going head-to-head
against the Ducks’ Colleen
Quam (2:13.80).
Oregon’s Penny Craves is tab
bed to run the 1,500-meters
after coming within four
seconds of her personal best
while qualifying for the NCAA
meet last week. The Ducks will
have two newcomers to the
1.500 in I.isa Johnson and Liz
Wilson to boost Francie Faure
(4:39.05). The top two Oregon
performers in the 3.000-meters,
Susan Long (9:55.66) and
Stephanie Wessell (9:59.05),
should have no problems as the
Huskies have no one who has
run under ten minutes.
The Ducks will dominate in
the sprints, due to
Washington’s lack of depth and
experience. Oregon will have
three top sprinters in both
events, with Stefanie Hunter
(11.9) leading the way for Vicky
Galbert (12.10) and Katie
O'Brien (12.26) in the
100-meters, while Hunter
(23.6). Suzy Setterholm (24.86)
and (’.albert (25.5) will run the
200.
Setterholm is not slated to run
the 400-meters, so the Ducks
will look to Karen Church (56.4)
for lea d e r s hip a g ain s t
Washington’s four freshman
entrants.
