Transition to semester system begins, director chosen

University officials have
chosen a director for the
semester system transition
team, which will organize the
change from the current quarter
system to semesters by 1990.
University Professor Mavis
Mate, head of the history
department, was appointed last
week as the University presi
dent’s special assistant for
semester transition.
Mate will lead the five
member transition team, which
will include representatives
from all sectors of the Universi
ty community affected by the
change to semesters, said
Alison Baker, executive assis
tant to the president.
The members of the transition
team have not yet been an
nounced. But Baker said the
team will include at least one
student member and probably
members from the academic
and student affairs sectors, the
business office and the physical
plant.
Mate said she accepted the
position because it presented a
challenge and because of her in
terest in curriculum reform.
“This is going to be an oppor
tunity totally to rethink the cur
riculum." Mate said. “We’ll
have to rethink the general
education requirements, and
departments will have to look at
every course and decide if it
needs to be expanded, or
discontinued or merged into
another course.”
Mate was chairwoman of the
University Curriculum Commit
tee for two years. She said she
worked on developing the
cluster-requirement system,
which currently guides most
University students.
“Professor Mate knows the
University well, she heads a
department, she’s well
respected and very organized,
we couldn't think of anybody
better qualified,” Baker said.
The appointment of Mate and
the recent forming of a State
System of Higher Education
Semester Committee signaled
the start of the conversion pro
cess that will move all Oregon’s
public, four-year colleges and
universities from the quarter
system to semesters.
