A Subject of All-Consuming Interest
Nkwswkkk On Campus
tries to cover not only
those issues that chal
lenge the mind, but those that
involve the heart—or heart
burn, in the case of this month’s
cover. Two years ago you in
formed us in a Gallup poll that
you were more dissatisfied with
the quality of food at your
schools than you were with
anything else, including the
caliber of teaching. Since then
much nutritional news has
been made, and we thought it
was time to evaluate the state
of campus eating. Most of our
correspondents contributed to
the stories that begin on page
12, but a big chunk of the re
[>ort mg was done by I>aura Sha
piro, who covers hxxl, dance
and lxH>ks for Nkwswkkk and is
the author of "Perfection Sal
ad: Women and (’(X)king at the
Turn of the Century” (Farrar.
Straus (linoux, $1(11)5). As a
dedicated food critic, Shapiro
had endured culinary assaults
before. but this assignment
brought her low: after dutifully
sampling the fried fish at one
college snack bar, she says, she
was seized by a post midnight
bout of "what might charitably
be called stomach flu " We con
gratulate her on her intrepid
reporting, and we hope she
doesn't put in for combat pay.
