International feminist to visit University
Margaret Papandreou, whose
husband Andreas is the prime
minister of Greece, will speak at
the University on the develop
ing leadership role of women in
the international peace move
ment Tuesday.
A native of Oak Park. 111.,
Papandreou is president and
founder of the Women’s Union
of Greece, a nationwide in
dependent feminist organiza
tion that has pressed for such re
cent reforms as divorce by
mutual consent, legalized abor
tion, equal pay for women and
eradication of the dowry
system.
Papandreou led the Greek
delegation to the United Na
tions Conference for the Decade
of Women in Nairobi. Kenya, in
1985. In an address to the con
ference. she proposed that the
U.N. subsidize meetings for
women from both sides of an in
ternational conflict to recom
mend ways to resolve the
conflict.
“Peace has no gender. But
striving for it is surely a
feminist goal because we have
made compassion, loving and
caring part of the new society
we struggle for," Papandreou
said at the Nairobi conference.
"We have made equality of
life a common cause, and we
have made machismo and brute
power targets of our feminist
wrath." she said. "Except for
fascists or madmen... the
whole of humanity wants
peace."
Papandreou earned jour
nalism and public health
degrees from the University of
Minnesota. She met Andreas
Papandreou while he was
teaching economics at the
University of Minnesota in
1948. They married in 1951 and
moved to his native Greece in
1959. He became the prime
minister in 1981.
The speech, sponsored by the
Mortar Board, the Center for the
Study of Women in Society and
the Women’s Studies Depart
ment, will begin at 8 p.m. in the
EMU Ballroom. It is free and
open to the public.
